KitchenAid Dishwasher Not Draining? The Filter, Hose and Air Gap Fixes
Quick answer: Turn off the power at the breaker and the water under the sink, bail out the water, then twist out the upper filter counterclockwise and rinse both filters. Run a short rinse and listen for the drain pump. Still full? Detach the hose at the garburator or sink tailpiece, check that the knockout plug is gone, flush the hose with warm water, and make sure there's a high loop or a clear air gap.
Once it drains, we pick BLITZ: one tablet in the empty dishwasher on a normal cycle breaks down the grease and food film left in the sump, filter and spray arms, for about $1.04 a clean. Septic-safe, like every BLITZ product, from a Québec company in Laval, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Before you start: power off and get the water out
Turn off the power at the breaker or unplug the dishwasher first, and lay towels in front of it. Bail the water into a bowl, then use a turkey baster or a sponge for the last of it in the sump, the low well around the filter.
KitchenAid's product help adds a step most guides skip: shut off the power at the circuit breaker, since turning off the control panel isn't enough, and close the water supply valve under the sink before you reach into the tub or under the counter.
How to fix a KitchenAid dishwasher that won't drain, step by step
- Take the water out: towels down, a cup, then a turkey baster or hand pump for the sump.
- Remove the filters. Lower rack out, twist the upper filter counterclockwise and lift it out, then the lower filter if your model has one.
- Rinse and inspect. Rinse both filters, brush off the residue and shine a flashlight into the sump for debris.
- Reassemble: lower filter flat, upper filter locked clockwise until fully engaged.
- Run a short rinse and listen for the drain pump. If water remains, go to the hose.
The KitchenAid drain hose, high loop, air gap and garburator
- The route: the hose must not be kinked, crushed or sagging, with a high loop or a clear air gap. KitchenAid: without one of them, wastewater can flow back into the dishwasher.
- The connection: loosen the clamp and detach the hose from the garburator or sink tailpiece, and check both ends for debris.
- The knockout plug: on a garburator, make sure it was removed from the inlet. KitchenAid's words: a retained plug blocks drainage completely.
- Flush and clear: run warm water through the hose, clear the tailpiece and the trap, then reattach the hose and tighten the clamp snugly.

Water spilling out of the air gap?
If water spills from the air gap into the sink during the drain, the pump is doing its job: KitchenAid says the blockage is downstream, in the hose to the drain or the sink plumbing. Clear the hose end, the tailpiece and the trap.
To keep it draining, KitchenAid says to scrape plates before loading, clean the filter regularly, keep the high loop in place after any under-sink work, clean the air gap cap and run hot water at the sink before a cycle.
Once it drains: clean out the grease that caused it
The food and grease that blocked the filter also coat the sump, the spray arms and the walls. Left there, they slow the next drain and smell. One BLITZ Dishwasher Cleaner tablet clears them:
- Put the clean filter back and lock it.
- Put one tablet in the detergent compartment of the empty dishwasher.
- Run a normal cycle, then one tablet every two weeks.
A box of 24 is $24.95, about $1.04 a clean, a year at one tablet every two weeks. The rest of the routine is in how to clean a KitchenAid dishwasher, and every brand's drain checks are in dishwasher not draining: 6 causes.
When to call KitchenAid or a technician
- No sound from the pump at the end of a cycle, with a clean filter and a clear hose.
- A steady hum but no water moving: something may be stuck in the pump.
- Water on the floor or under the cabinet.
- A burning smell, damaged wiring or a breaker that keeps tripping: stop using it.
Have the model and serial number ready: they're on a label on the edge of the door or the tub opening.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my KitchenAid dishwasher not draining?
A dirty filter, a kinked or sagging hose, a garburator knockout plug left in, or a blocked air gap, tailpiece or trap. Clean the filters first, then follow the hose.
Why is water coming out of my air gap?
The dishwasher pumps, but the water can't get past the hose, the tailpiece or the sink trap. KitchenAid says the blockage is downstream of the air gap.
Do I need to turn off the breaker?
Yes. KitchenAid says turning off the control panel isn't enough: switch off the breaker and close the water valve under the sink first.
When should I call for service?
If draining doesn't improve after these checks, or you see leaks, unclear error codes or anything electrical, KitchenAid says to schedule service.
