The reason is simple, water pools into the small nooks and crannies. I applied the gel liberally around the gasket, and the silicon seal where dark 'growth' can be seen. Ensure the area is dry and mostly clean (no hair, lint, etc.). Make sure to shake a lot, its a bit runny if not shook, I don't know if this effects the strength or not. I left it overnight, and returned in the afternoon, about 11 hours. And using a wringed out towel in warm water, I wiped it down, it hardened into small little chunks, which is very interesting. I also read the ingredients, bleach and lye, two strong and effective ingredients against mold. Overall, works as expected but be prepared to be very generous with the applicaiton, one bottle might not last that long.
