Finish Dishwasher Cleaner Alternative: BLITZ vs Finish in Canada

Short answer

BLITZ is the lower-cost alternative to Finish Dishwasher Cleaner in Canada: 24 tablets for $23.95, about $1.00 a clean, against $3.99 for a Finish In-Wash tablet and $4.75 to $6.77 for a Finish bottle (regular prices, October 20, 2026). One BLITZ tablet goes in the detergent compartment on a normal cycle. The Finish bottle needs a cycle of at least 60°C, and Finish Canada says to use In-Wash every week.

BLITZ vs Finish Dishwasher Cleaner, side by side

Finish sells two different machine cleaners in Canada: a 250 mL liquid bottle that runs in an empty dishwasher, and In-Wash tablets that run with a normal load. Both are compared here with BLITZ, using each brand's own directions and regular prices on October 20, 2026. Prices move, so check before you buy.

How to use Finish Dishwasher Cleaner (Finish's own directions)

The 250 mL liquid bottle

  1. Empty the dishwasher and clear the filter "of any leftover food or debris."
  2. Peel the sticker off the cap. "Do not remove the cap." Reckitt's Canadian safety data sheet describes the cap as filled with wax, with the sticker on top.
  3. Set it upside down in the bottom rack. Not the top rack, and not the cutlery basket (that's Glisten's bottle).
  4. Run "a high temperature cycle of at least 60⁰C." Finish adds: "Do not add any other detergent or cleaning agent." Our reading: the heat is what opens the waxed cap, so skip eco and quick cycles.
  5. Take the bottle out and recycle it. Finish says to do this "approximately once a month."

Finish In-Wash tablets

Load your dishes and detergent as usual, set the wrapped tablet on the bottom of the dishwasher and run a regular cycle. Finish says "Do not unwrap, pierce, or cut the tab" and to use it "with dry hands only." On frequency, Finish's own listings disagree: finishdishwashing.ca says "once a week," while its Amazon.ca listing says "3 Months Supply" in the title, once a month in the bullets and "Use once a week" in the directions.

BLITZ, for comparison

Rinse the filter, put one tablet in the detergent compartment of the empty dishwasher and run a normal cycle with no detergent. Nothing to place upside down or take out after.

Finish dishwasher cleaner bottle vs BLITZ tablet steps: the bottle takes 5 steps with a waxed cap, bottom rack and a 60°C cycle, the BLITZ tablet takes 4 with a normal cycle
The two routines side by side. Sources: Finish Canada directions, Reckitt's Canadian safety data sheet and the BLITZ directions, checked October 20, 2026.

Careful: Never put two cleaners in the same cycle, or a cleaner with detergent unless its label says so (only In-Wash does). Whatever you use, clear the filter by hand first: no cleaner flushes out food stuck in the mesh. Our dishwasher smell guide shows how, brand by brand.

What's in Finish Dishwasher Cleaner

Finish's own ingredient label (SmartLabel for the US 8.45 oz bottle, updated October 2, 2026) lists: "Water, Citric Acid, C10-16 Alcohols Ethoxylated Propoxylated (C12-14 Alcohols Ethoxylated Propoxylated), Sodium Sulfate, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Fragrance/Parfum, BHT, CI 61585." We found no full list for the Canadian bottle.

Reckitt's Canadian safety data sheet declares citric acid (10 to 30%) and an ethoxylated isotridecanol surfactant (5 to 10%). Finish says the liquid "removes grease and limescale build up in the pipes."

The same sheet (2018, written for workplace handling) classes the liquid as causing serious eye damage (signal word "Danger"). At home, follow the label and keep it away from children and your eyes.

BLITZ's product page lists "Sodium carbonate, citric acid." and says the tablet removes grease, grime and limescale buildup helps get rid of the smell at the source and leaves a light, fresh scent (lemon, per its Amazon.ca listing). We have no side-by-side cleaning test, so this guide compares what can be checked: directions, pack size and price.

Cost per clean and per year in Canada (October 20, 2026)

  • BLITZ: $23.95 ÷ 24 tablets = about $1.00 a clean. One every two weeks is a year for $23.95. Even with $7.95 shipping on a single box, that's about $1.33 a clean.
  • Finish liquid: $9.49 ÷ 2 at Canadian Tire = $4.75 a clean; $5.99 a bottle on Amazon.ca; $6.77 for Dual Action at Walmart.ca and Amazon.ca. Monthly, as Finish advises: 12 bottles, $56.94 a year at best.
  • Finish In-Wash: $11.97 ÷ 3 = $3.99 a tablet on Amazon.ca and Walmart.ca ($11.99 for a 3-pack of Finish cleaner tabs at Canadian Tire). Weekly, as Finish Canada advises: 52 tablets, $207.48 a year. Even monthly, it's $47.88.
Bar chart of dishwasher cleaner cost per clean in Canada on October 20, 2026: BLITZ $1.00, Finish In-Wash $3.99, Finish tabs $4.00, Finish liquid $4.75 to $6.77

At the same pace, the gap stays large. Clean monthly with BLITZ and one box lasts two years, about $12 a year. Clean every two weeks with Finish bottles and it's 24 bottles, $113.88 a year at the Canadian Tire price.

What dishwasher makers say about cleaners

None of the five makers we checked names Finish. GE, LG and Samsung say to use a dishwasher cleaner, and Bosch and Whirlpool describe one tablet or pack in the detergent dispenser of an empty dishwasher: exactly how BLITZ works. Quotes from each maker, with Frigidaire and KitchenAid, are in our best dishwasher cleaner in Canada roundup.

Finish dishwasher cleaner myths vs facts: the cleaner is not the detergent, 3 In-Wash tabs last 3 weeks at Finish's weekly pace, the bottle needs 60°C, and makers don't name Finish

Frequently asked questions

Is Finish Dishwasher Cleaner the same as Finish dishwasher tablets?

No. Finish detergent tablets wash dishes. Finish Dishwasher Cleaner (the 250 mL bottle) and Finish In-Wash tablets clean the machine. BLITZ is a machine cleaner too.

How often should you use Finish Dishwasher Cleaner?

Finish Canada says the bottle "approximately once a month" and In-Wash "once a week." The In-Wash Amazon.ca listing mixes both: "3 Months Supply" in the title, weekly in its directions. BLITZ is one tablet every two weeks.

Does the Finish bottle go in the top or bottom rack?

The bottom rack, upside down, with the cap on and the sticker removed. Then run a cycle of at least 60°C with no detergent.

Can you run Finish Dishwasher Cleaner with dishes?

Not the bottle: Finish says to run it empty, with no detergent. In-Wash tablets are made to run with a load and your usual detergent. BLITZ runs empty, with no detergent.
