How we compared
Our sources, and what we left out
We used each maker's published directions and ingredients, regular Canadian prices on October 24, 2026 divided by the uses in the pack, and ice maker manuals. Published facts, not lab tests. Vinegar and lemon juice are priced for Igloo's 1:1 mix in its 1.5-quart tank: about 710 mL of each.
Not ranked: Affresh Ice Machine Cleaner (no Canadian retailer found on October 24, 2026) and Nu-Calgon's nickel-safe cleaner, an HVAC-supply product sold on Amazon.ca only by third-party resellers ($66.13 to $103.16), with no countertop dose.
The picks, ranked
1. BLITZ Ice Machine Cleaner
Our pick: best ice machine cleaner in Canada

What's in it: sodium carbonate, citric acid and sulfamic acid, with no chlorine or bleach. Its Amazon.ca listing calls it "Nickel-Safe" and names GE Profile, Opal and Frigidaire.
How to use it: empty the machine, fill the reservoir with drinking water, drop in one tablet and run the Clean mode twice. Drain, wipe the inside dry and run fresh water through. Every 1 to 2 months, monthly if it runs every day. Full routine: our guide on how to clean an ice machine.
Price: 24 for $24.95, $1.04 a clean ($24.95 ÷ 24), same on Amazon.ca. Rated 4.9 out of 5 (13 reviews) on goblitzclean.com.
2. ACTIVE Ice Machine Cleaner
What's in it: "Food Grade Citric Acid and other Simple Ingredients," says its Amazon.ca listing, with no full list.
How to use it: one tablet per clean (24 tablets are "24 uses," says useactive.com), or 4 oz of the liquid.
Price: on Amazon.ca, sold by ACTIVE Official: 24 tablets for $28.95 ($1.21 a clean), or 32 oz of liquid for $29.95 (8 uses, $3.74). Its own store charges in US dollars: "All payments shall be in US dollars," say its terms.

3. Essential Values Ice Machine Cleaner
What's in it: the Amazon.ca listing calls it "Nickel Safe" but gives no ingredient list.
How to use it: "One 16oz bottle works for 4 uses," so about 4 oz per clean.
Price: 2 bottles for $25.99 on Amazon.ca (8 uses): $3.25 a clean, three times a BLITZ clean.
4. Impresa Ice Machine Cleaner/Descaler
What's in it: the listing says "100% nickel-safe" and "Made In The USA," with no ingredient list.
How to use it: "Four total uses" per bottle, "every 2-3 months."
Price: $32.22 on Amazon.ca from a third-party seller: $8.06 a clean, nearly eight times BLITZ.

5. GE Profile Opal Cleaning Kit
What's in it: a 5 oz bottle of cleaning solution and a cloth, for the Opal only. No ingredients listed.
How to use it: the 5 oz bottle "contains enough for two cleaning uses," says Abt, a US appliance retailer. The Opal 2.0 manual says to descale with this kit or with white vinegar, run the clean cycle up to 3 times, then let it soak 18 hours.
Price: the only Amazon.ca offer was a third-party seller at $84.16: $42.08 a clean. We found no Canadian retailer selling it directly.

6. White vinegar
Allen's is $4.49 for 4 L at Canadian Tire. Igloo mixes vinegar and water 1:1, about 710 mL in its tank: about $0.80 a clean. GE uses straight vinegar, up to 3 cycles and an 18-hour soak. Then you rinse until the smell is out of the lines.
Careful: some manuals (GE, Igloo) add a diluted bleach step. Health Canada warns never to mix bleach with other cleaning products, so never combine it with vinegar, lemon juice or a descaling tablet: drain and rinse completely between them.
7. Lemon juice or citric acid powder
Lemon juice: Igloo also lists lemon and water at 1:1, and Euhomy suggests lemon water. Great Value is $2.88 for 946 mL at Walmart.ca: about $2.16 for 710 mL.
Citric acid powder: Yogti is $11.99 for 907 g on Amazon.ca. No ice maker manual we checked gives a dose. Our estimate: about 40 g matches the acid in Igloo's 710 mL of vinegar, so about $0.53. The chemistry is in citric acid vs vinegar.
Cost per clean and per year

See the yearly math
At one clean a month (BLITZ's schedule for a machine that runs daily), price per clean × 12:
- BLITZ: $12.48 a year, and one $24.95 box covers two years (four at one clean every two months).
- ACTIVE tablets $14.48, Essential Values $38.99, Impresa $96.66, the GE Opal kit $504.96 at the only Amazon.ca price we found.
- Vinegar ($9.56) and citric acid ($6.35) cost less, but you mix a batch and rinse out the vinegar smell each time, and no manual gives a citric acid dose.

BLITZ in your ice maker brand

One tablet in the reservoir water, then the Clean mode twice, whatever the brand. The chart gives each model's button.
Notes for GE Profile Opal and Frigidaire
- GE Profile Opal 2.0: fill to the Max Fill line, hold Clean for 3 seconds. To rinse, GE says to add five cups of fresh water, three times.
- Frigidaire countertop: the EFIC manual asks for a weekly clean; use the Clean or Self-Clean button if yours has one.
