Complete guide

Garburator, Ice Maker and Stainless Steel Care

Kitchen appliance care, in three habits: one BLITZ tablet in the garburator twice a month, one in a countertop ice maker every 1 to 2 months, and soapy microfibre on stainless, with the grain.

  • Garburator: the tablet cleans the chamber, not a clog or a jam.
  • Ice maker: BLITZ tablets are not for fridge ice makers.
  • Stainless: on plain stainless, BLITZ Ceramic Coating helps prints wipe off. Not a cleaner.

How to clean a garburator (garbage disposal)

Odours start under the splash guard (where Waste King says most begin), on the sink flange, and in the grinding chamber, where no brush reaches. For grease odours there, InSinkErator's manual suggests a disposer cleaner: that's what a BLITZ tablet is.

How to clean a countertop ice maker

A countertop machine pumps the same reservoir water to its prongs, cycle after cycle, so old water and scale end up in your ice. The full clean takes about an hour, mostly waiting: one BLITZ tablet, the Clean mode twice, then a rinse.

How to clean stainless steel appliances without streaks

Every maker we checked starts with mild soap and warm water: wipe with the grain, rinse, then dry right away with a microfibre. Streaks are almost always soap or water left to dry.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you clean a garbage disposal?

We suggest a BLITZ tablet in the grinding chamber twice a month and a scrub under the splash guard every week or two, or as soon as it smells. Run cold water every time you grind. Steps: how to clean a garburator safely.

Can you put drain cleaner in a garbage disposal?

No. InSinkErator, Moen, GE and Waste King all say lye and caustic drain cleaners don't belong in their units. A slow drain needs a plunger, the trap or a plumber: see disposal cleaner vs drain cleaner.

Do ice cubes and lemon peels clean a garburator?

Not really. Ice scours and citrus freshens, but neither removes the grease and food residue behind most odours; InSinkErator's FAQ says there are better ways than ice. See ice, lemon peels or vinegar.

How often should you clean a countertop ice maker?

Fresh water every 24 hours, the basket every week, and a full descaling clean every 1 to 2 months, monthly if it runs daily. See how to clean an ice maker.

Can I use an ice machine cleaner in my fridge's ice maker?

No: BLITZ Ice Machine Cleaner is made for countertop and portable ice makers, not ones built into a fridge or freezer. For off-tasting fridge ice, GE points to old ice and the water filter. See why ice tastes bad.

What is the best way to clean stainless steel appliances?

Warm water with a drop of dish soap on a microfibre, with the grain, then a damp rinse and an immediate dry. It suits every finish; polish and coatings are for plain stainless only. See how to choose a stainless steel cleaner.
