How to Clean a Front-Load Washer Gasket: Folds, Drain Holes and a Weekly Routine

Short answer

Once a week, empty the drum, press the rubber fold down all the way around, pick out hair, lint and coins, and clear the small drain holes at the bottom. Wipe inside the fold and the outer lip with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth, then dry it and leave the door open. It takes about five minutes, by our estimate. Black stains that won't wipe off need a gel stain remover, and the drum behind the seal gets one BLITZ tablet every two weeks.

How to clean a front-load washer gasket, step by step

The gasket (also called the door seal, door boot or bellow) is the rubber ring between the door and the drum. Its fold holds a little water, lint and detergent after every load, and a cleaning cycle doesn't scrub inside it. Your hand and a cloth do.

You need: a soft cloth or sponge, a bowl of warm water with a few drops of dish soap, a dry towel, and an old soft toothbrush for the corners. Rubber gloves if you have them. Time: about five minutes once you're in the habit (our estimate).

Five steps to clean a front-load washer door seal once a week: empty the drum, press the fold down, pick out lint and coins and clear the drain holes, wipe with soapy water, dry and leave the door open
Chart: the weekly door seal wipe in five steps, based on Samsung Canada, GE Appliances, Whirlpool and Maytag care pages, checked October 19, 2026. Times are our estimates.
  1. Empty the drum and open the door wide. Take out every sock. Small items love the fold.
  2. Press the fold down with both hands. That's GE's method: press the gasket down and work your way around so you can see underneath. On most seals the fold opens toward the drum; go gently, you're not trying to pull the rubber off its rim.
  3. Pick out what's caught, and clear the drain holes. Hair, lint, coins, buttons, hair ties. At the bottom (six o'clock), small holes or slots let water drain back to the tub: GE says to keep those holes clear, and LG to empty the groove at six o'clock.
  4. Wipe inside the fold, then the outer lip. Warm, soapy water on a soft cloth, as Samsung Canada (when there's buildup) and Maytag recommend. Use the toothbrush in the creases. Rinse the cloth often so you're not spreading the grime around. Then wipe the outer face of the seal and the door glass where they meet: GE notes that soil and soap left on the door seal can cause small leaks.
  5. Rinse, dry, and leave it open. Wipe with a cloth dampened in clean water, then dry every fold with the towel. Leave the door and the detergent drawer open until everything is dry. Samsung's advice is to make sure the gasket is dry before you close the door.

Tip: Do it right after you take the last load of the day out. The rubber is already wet, the grime is soft, and the seal gets the whole night to dry.

Where dirt hides: the folds and the drain holes

A seal can look clean from the front and be grimy inside. Four spots need your attention: the outer lip that presses on the glass, the fold, the bottom of the seal where water collects, and the drain holes.

How often should you clean the door seal?

Once a week. Samsung Canada says to wipe the door, gasket and detergent area weekly. LG says to clean the gasket at least once a month, so if you've skipped weeks, monthly is the minimum. Here is the whole routine for the seal and the drum behind it:

When Door seal and drum routine
After the last load Laundry out, bottom of the fold towel-dried, door and drawer ajar
Every week The five-minute wipe: fold, drain holes, outer lip, dry
Every two weeks One BLITZ tablet in the empty drum, hottest cycle or Tub Clean
When black stains appear BLITZ Mold Stain Remover gel, 3 to 5 hours, wipe and rinse

What LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Electrolux and Bosch say

The makers agree on the basics: look inside the fold, remove what's caught, wipe, dry, leave the door open. They differ on what to wipe with when there's buildup.

Brand, how often What they say to do
LG
At least monthly
Clear the groove at six o'clock. Wipe with 5 g of oxygen bleach in 5 L of warm water, wearing rubber gloves. Towel-dry the gasket and door glass, door open until dry.
Samsung
Weekly (Samsung Canada)
Pull the gasket back and wipe the folds with a soft cloth, with warm water and mild soap if there's buildup. Dry completely. The WF6000T manual adds a bleach wipe: 3/4 cup of liquid chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of warm water, 5 minutes, then wipe and dry.
Whirlpool
No set schedule
Pull the seal back to look for objects. For stains or buildup: wipe the seal with a cloth dipped in 3/4 cup (177 mL) of liquid chlorine bleach per 1 gallon (3.8 L) of warm water, let stand 5 minutes, dry, door open. Rubber gloves.
Maytag
Regularly (washer: monthly)
Warm water, mild detergent and a toothbrush for the crevices, then dry the folds. No harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that could damage the seal.
GE
Regularly
Press the gasket down with both hands and clear the holes behind it. Mild detergent, diluted bleach or diluted vinegar, then wipe the solution off with warm water before the next wash.
Electrolux
Regularly
Check the seal for coins and buttons. Leave the door and dispenser slightly ajar. If the seal is loose, damaged or deformed, stop using the washer.
Bosch
Not stated
A cloth and warm water. Abrasive cleaners aren't needed and can attack the rubber.

The bleach mixes are wiped on, not poured in. Whirlpool's and Samsung's 3/4 cup per gallon is a solution for a cloth on the seal, left 5 minutes and wiped dry, not a dose for a wash cycle.

What not to use on a rubber washer seal

What's safe on a front-load washer door seal: warm water, mild dish soap and a soft cloth, but never abrasives, sharp tools, solvents, or bleach mixed with vinegar or ammonia
Chart: safe and unsafe cleaners for a washer door seal, from LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Maytag, GE and Bosch care pages and Health Canada, checked October 19, 2026.
  • Abrasive powders and scouring pads. Bosch says they can attack the rubber; Maytag warns they could damage the seal.
  • Sharp tools. One slip with a knife or pick and you've made a tear.
  • Solvents. Samsung's manual says not to use benzene, thinner or alcohol to clean the appliance.
  • Bleach mixed with anything. Health Canada warns that bleach mixed with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaners gives off toxic gases. Rinse the seal with clean water between products.

Vinegar? You don't need it. Warm, soapy water does the weekly wipe, black stains that stay get BLITZ Mold Stain Remover on the dry seal for 3 to 5 hours, and the drum gets one BLITZ tablet every two weeks. More in washing machine cleaner vs vinegar.

Habits that keep the seal dry and clean longer

Grime in the fold needs two things: residue and moisture. LG explains that when the door stays closed, moisture can't dry out and mould may form inside the gasket. Cut both:

  • Take wet laundry out right away. A load left sitting keeps the seal wet for hours.
  • Towel-dry the bottom of the fold after the last load of the day. That's where the water sits.
  • Leave the door and the detergent drawer ajar between loads, as LG, Samsung and Electrolux suggest (Whirlpool and Maytag also say to leave the door open). If you have small children or pets, keep the laundry room door closed instead.
  • Use HE detergent at the dose on the label, and go easy on fabric softener. The extra is what ends up as slime in the fold.
  • Keep the drum clean. The seal sits in the same water as the drum, so residue in the tub ends up in the fold too.

If the washer smells even with a clean seal, the smell is coming from somewhere else: the drawer, the pump filter or the drain. Our front-load washer smell guide matches each smell to its source.

Black stains that won't wipe off

Black spots that survive the soapy wipe are mould stains in the surface of the rubber, and scrubbing harder won't lift them. Dry the seal, run a line of BLITZ Mold Stain Remover gel on the stains, leave it 3 to 5 hours, then wipe it off and rinse. The full method, safety steps and what to do about stained laundry are in our guide to mould stains on a front-load washer gasket.

When does a washer door seal need replacing?

A dirty seal needs cleaning. A damaged one needs replacing, and no cleaner will fix it. Use this to tell which is which:

Front-load washer door seal check: wipe off grey film and black dots, treat mould stains that stay with a stain gel, and replace a seal that is torn, holed or cracked
Chart: when to clean, treat or replace a washer door seal. Sources: GE Appliances, Electrolux and LG support pages, checked October 19, 2026, and the BLITZ Mold Stain Remover directions.
  • Replace it if it's torn, holed, cracked or hard. Electrolux's advice for a loose, damaged or deformed seal is to stop using the washer, unplug it, turn off the water tap and contact an authorized service centre. A small tear at the bottom can leak onto the floor on every load.
  • Replace it if the stain is deep and it bothers you. A gel lifts surface stains; a seal stained for years may fade without coming fully clean.
  • Check before you blame the seal for a leak. GE says soil and soap left on the door seal can cause small leaks, and so can a sleeve hanging over the drum edge when the door closes. Clean the lip first and watch the next load.

It's a part you can order. The seal is specific to your model, so start with the model number (usually on a label around the door opening or on the back of the washer; your manual shows where). Order the door seal, or "door boot", by that number from the maker's parts service or an appliance-parts store.

The seal is usually held by clamps, and the front panel often has to come off, so call an appliance technician if you'd rather not take the washer apart.

The drum behind the seal: one BLITZ tablet every two weeks

The same detergent residue and minerals build up in the drum and tub behind the seal, where you can't reach. That's the job of a cleaning cycle. The tablet cleans the drum and tub; your cloth cleans the fold. You need both.

  • One tablet. Drop one BLITZ washing machine cleaner tablet into the empty drum (not the drawer) and run the hottest cycle or your washer's Tub Clean. Front-load, top-load and HE washers.
  • A year in one box. 24 tablets for $24.95, one every two weeks: about $1.04 a clean.
  • Unscented and septic-safe. It removes the residue instead of covering the smell.
  • Rated 4.9 out of 5 (14 reviews) on goblitzclean.com.
  • From a Québec company based in Laval, with service in French and English. Free shipping in Canada from $40 ($7.95 below), most orders in 2 to 3 business days, 10% back in store credit and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Also on Amazon.ca.

If you're also treating stains with the gel, run the tablet cycle first and let the washer drain, then apply the gel, as the BLITZ product page says. Never both at once. If the washer still smells after all that, see what a cleaning cycle misses.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best way to clean a front-load washer gasket?

Press the fold down, remove what's caught, clear the drain holes, then wipe inside the fold with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Rinse, towel-dry every fold and leave the door open. Weekly is enough for most homes.

Can I use bleach on my washer's rubber seal?

Diluted, yes. Whirlpool and Samsung give 3/4 cup of liquid chlorine bleach in a gallon of warm water, wiped on with a cloth, left 5 minutes, then wiped dry; LG uses oxygen bleach instead. Wear gloves and never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or another cleaner.

Can I clean the gasket with vinegar?

You don't need it. Warm, soapy water, the routine method Samsung and Maytag give, does the weekly wipe. For black stains that stay after wiping, use BLITZ Mold Stain Remover gel on the dry seal for 3 to 5 hours, never with another cleaner.

What are the holes at the bottom of the door seal?

Drain holes. They let the water that collects in the fold run back into the tub. If lint or a coin blocks them, water sits in the seal, so check them every time you wipe it.

How do I get black mould off the rubber seal?

If it doesn't wipe off, it's a stain in the rubber surface. Use a gel stain remover on the dry seal, such as BLITZ Mold Stain Remover for 3 to 5 hours, then wipe and rinse. Step by step in our washer gasket mould guide.

Can you replace a front-load washer door seal?

Yes. It's a model-specific part you order by your washer's model number from the maker or an appliance-parts store. Replace it if it's torn, cracked, leaking or stained too deep to clean. A technician can fit it, since the clamps and often the front panel have to come off.

Does a washer cleaning tablet clean the gasket?

Not inside the fold. The tablet cleans the drum and tub during the cycle; the fold, the drain holes and the outer lip still need a cloth. Do both: a weekly wipe and one tablet every two weeks.
