Washing Machine Cleaner vs Vinegar: What Washer Makers Say and What Each Costs
For routine cleaning, use a cleaner tablet. Vinegar is a weak acid: it loosens light scale but has no detergent for the soap and softener film behind most washer smells, and Whirlpool and Maytag say not to pour it in the drum. A BLITZ tablet pairs citric acid with an oxygen cleaner and a surfactant, for $1.04 a clean. At Samsung's 4-cup dose, vinegar costs a bit more.
Which should you pick?
- We pick BLITZ: one tablet every two weeks handles residue, scale and smell in one cycle.
- No vinegar smell: BLITZ is unscented, so the laundry room doesn't smell of vinegar during or after the cycle.
- A year in one box: 24 tablets for $24.95, from a Québec company in Laval with service in French and English.
- Prefer Amazon? BLITZ is on Amazon.ca too, without the 10% store credit.

What each one actually does in a washer
Vinegar is a weak acid. Canadian vinegar is 4.1 to 12.3% acetic acid (Food and Drug Regulations), a weak acid (pKa 4.76, PubChem). Acid dissolves limescale (mostly calcium carbonate). But vinegar has no surfactant, so it does little for the waxy detergent and softener film behind most musty smells.
A cleaner tablet does several jobs. The BLITZ Washing Machine Cleaner lists citric acid, sodium carbonate, sodium percarbonate, sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, sodium sulfate, sodium silicate and zeolite. Three do the cleaning:
- Citric acid is the descaler, the job vinegar does.
- Sodium percarbonate is an oxygen-based cleaner (no chlorine), the type LG Canada names for Tub Clean.
- The olefin sulfonate is a surfactant: it lifts the residue so the rinse carries it away.
Why citric acid and not acetic, and why one smells and the other doesn't: see citric acid vs vinegar.
Careful: neither one cleans the door seal folds or the drain pump filter. Those are hand jobs, whatever goes in the drum.
What washer makers say about vinegar
Makers disagree. In their own words, from their support pages on October 20, 2026:

| Maker | What its page says |
|---|---|
| Whirlpool | "Over time, vinegar's acidity can cause damage to washing machine components, particularly rubber seals and hoses." |
| Maytag | "No, you should not pour vinegar in your washing machine drum." |
| Samsung Canada | For hard water: "add four cups of white vinegar to the tub", run the longest, hottest cycle with no detergent, then a hot cycle "to rinse away any remaining vinegar". |
| LG Canada | "You can also use regular white vinegar. Just pour it in the liquid detergent cup in the dispenser drawer. 200 ml or ¾ cup will do." |
| GE (top-load) | "pour 1 cup or 250 ml of liquid bleach, vinegar or a washing machine cleaner into the basket" |
| Bosch | "we do not recommend using vinegar" |

Doses differ by country too. Samsung New Zealand suggests "½ cup of vinegar" in an empty hot wash for a smell, an eighth of Samsung Canada's hard-water dose. Bleach doses and the never-mix rule are in vinegar or bleach to clean a washing machine.
Using a cleaner tablet on LG, Samsung, Whirlpool and Maytag
- LG. One tablet in the empty drum, then Tub Clean. BLITZ has no chlorine or bleach, and its oxygen cleaner (sodium percarbonate) is the type LG Canada names for Tub Clean. Details in how to clean an LG washer.
- Samsung. Self Clean takes liquid chlorine bleach only (WF45T6000 manual: "Do not use or mix any other detergent or chemicals"). Run BLITZ in a separate hot cycle, Self Clean on another day. See how to clean a Samsung washer.
- Whirlpool and Maytag. One tablet in the empty drum, then the washer's cleaning cycle, or the hottest cycle if it has none. No vinegar in the drum, as both makers ask.
Does vinegar damage rubber seals?
Three makers say it can, over time. Whirlpool: the acidity can cause rubber seals "to weaken over time". Maytag: it "can damage rubber seals, hoses and other components". Bosch: it "may degrade the rubber parts". Consumer Reports (updated March 31, 2026) adds that regular use "can damage the rubber seals and hoses in some washing machines", front loaders especially, per a repair-shop owner it quotes.
What no one publishes: how many vinegar cycles it takes. A BLITZ tablet has a set dose: one tablet, one cycle every two weeks, rinsed out in the same wash, with nothing left to soak. Wipe the gasket folds dry after any wash. Black spots that stay: mould stains on a washer gasket.
The smell: during the cycle and after
During: acetic acid evaporates easily, more so in hot water. That's why a hot vinegar cycle fills the laundry room, and why Samsung adds a second hot cycle to rinse it out.
After: the vinegar smell fades, but the musty one returns if the residue stays. For a musty smell LG says Tub Clean three weeks in a row; Samsung Canada says a washer cleaner "may help" if odours persist. BLITZ is unscented, so nothing masks the result: you can tell whether the smell is gone.

Cost per clean (October 20, 2026)
Allen's Original White Vinegar, 4 L, was $4.49 at its regular price on canadiantire.ca on October 20, 2026, about 11 cents per 100 mL. Prices move and vary by store, so check yours.

- LG, 200 mL: about $0.22.
- GE, 250 mL: about $0.28.
- Samsung, 4 cups (1 L in 250 mL cups): about $1.12, plus a second hot cycle.
- BLITZ: $24.95 for 24 tablets, $1.04 a clean.
What the $1.04 buys: a cleaner for the detergent residue vinegar can't touch, one tablet, one cycle instead of Samsung's two, and no vinegar smell. A year of costs, bleach included: are washer cleaner tablets worth it. How often: how often to clean your washing machine.

Vinegar in a washing machine: where it belongs
Vinegar is the wrong tool for detergent residue in the drum. Keep it for the outside jobs:
- You're soaking a removable detergent drawer. Whirlpool and Maytag both suggest equal parts white vinegar and water for this.
- You're wiping the outside. Whirlpool calls vinegar "a viable natural method" for exterior parts.
Careful: one product per cycle. Never vinegar with bleach: Health Canada warns that bleach reacts with acids, including vinegar, and releases toxic gases. No vinegar in a tablet cycle either.
Where BLITZ fits

Frequently asked questions
Is a washing machine cleaner better than vinegar?
For routine cleaning, yes: the tablet has a surfactant and an oxygen cleaner for detergent residue, which vinegar lacks, plus citric acid for scale. One tablet, $1.04 a clean.
Can I clean my washer with vinegar, and how much?
The makers that give a dose don't agree on it: 200 mL in the liquid detergent cup for LG, 1 cup (250 mL) in the basket for a GE top loader, 4 cups in the tub for Samsung in Canada. Whirlpool, Maytag and Bosch say not to put it in the drum at all. A BLITZ tablet goes in the empty drum of any brand.
Can I use vinegar and a cleaner tablet together?
No. LG says one cleaning agent per tub clean, and BLITZ already contains citric acid. Keep vinegar for the drawer soak.
Is Affresh better than vinegar?
For detergent residue, a cleaner tablet does what vinegar can't. To compare two tablets on price per clean, dose and where they're sold, read BLITZ vs Affresh.
