Front-Load Washer Smell: Seal, Drawer or Drain? How to Find the Source and Fix It
A front-load washer smells because water and residue stay trapped in three places that can't dry with the door shut: the bottom fold of the door seal, the detergent drawer and its recess, and the drain side (the pump filter, the drain hose or a dry floor drain). Sniff each one: musty at the door is the seal, sour at the drawer is detergent and softener residue, sewer while it drains is the plumbing. Clean that spot by hand, then run the hottest cycle with one BLITZ tablet in the empty drum, and repeat every two weeks.

Why front-load washers smell: three sources
A front loader closes its door on a rubber seal and washes with little water. The water left after the spin can't dry out while the door stays shut, so lint, detergent and softener residue sit in three places: the bottom fold of the door seal, the detergent drawer and its recess, and the drain side (the pump filter, the drain hose and the trap of the drain it empties into).
The odour section of the LG WM4000H owner's manual names all three: an uncleaned gasket, debris left in the drain pump filter, and a drain hose that siphons water back into the washer. Samsung's WF45T6000 manual lists the seal and the filter too. A fourth spot, the outer tub around the drum, is out of reach: that's the cleaning cycle's job, so it comes last.

How to find which one: the 5-check sniff test
You need an empty washer, a flashlight, a towel and a shallow pan. If you just ran a hot cycle, let it cool first: the filter holds that water.
- Smell the door seal. Pull back the bottom fold. A musty smell, grey slime or a lost sock means source 1.
- Pull out the detergent drawer. Smell it, then shine the flashlight into the empty recess. Black or pink slime on its roof means source 2.
- Open the pump filter. Towel and pan first. Stale grey water, lint, hair or coins mean source 3.
- Smell the drain while it drains. Run an empty rinse and spin and stand by the floor drain or standpipe. Sewer smell there means plumbing.
- Everything clean and still musty? The residue is on the drum and outer tub: go to the cleaning cycle.
The kind of smell narrows it down before you open anything:

Tip: It's often more than one. Fix every spot that smells, in this order: seal, drawer, filter, drain, then the drum. A clean drum with a dirty filter still smells.
Source 1: the door seal
Water pools at the bottom of the seal after every spin, with lint and detergent. LG explains that when the door stays closed, the moisture can't dry and mould may form inside the gasket. Its manual also asks you to check under the seal for small items when you unload.
The fix: pull the fold back, pick out what's caught, wipe with warm, soapy water, dry it and leave the door open. Samsung Canada says to do it weekly. The full routine (folds, drain holes, safe cleaners) is in how to clean a front-load washer gasket.

Black spots that stay after wiping are mould stains on the rubber. A cleaning tablet won't lift them: they're on the seal, not in the drum. Use a gel on the dry seal: BLITZ Mold Stain Remover stays on for 3 to 5 hours, then you wipe it off. Full method: how to remove mould stains from a washer gasket.
Source 2: the detergent drawer
The smell often comes from the recess, not the drawer. LG notes that detergent left in the drawer, or long use, builds up residue. Here's how the LG WM4000H and Samsung WF45T6000 manuals say to clean it:
- Unplug, pull the drawer out until it stops, press the release button or lever and lift it out.
- Take out the inserts and wash everything in warm water with a soft brush (LG: no soap).
- Brush the recess. LG asks you to remove all residue from the upper and lower parts of the recess with a small, non-metal brush. Look up: the roof is where the slime hides.
- Dry, reinsert, rinse. Samsung suggests an empty Rinse+Spin to flush what's left.
How often: once or twice a month (LG), about once a month (Samsung Canada). Never spray water inside the washer: LG warns of fire or electric shock.
Tip: Pods and detergent tablets go in the drum, never in the drawer (LG and Samsung). And leave the drawer ajar after each wash so it dries (LG Canada, Samsung Canada).
Source 3: the pump filter and the drain
The drain pump filter
Most front loaders have a filter behind a small cover at the bottom front. It catches lint, hair and coins before they reach the pump, and it sits in water. Samsung's troubleshooting table is plain: debris left in the filter may produce odours over time. A clogged filter also shows a code: OE on LG, 5C on Samsung.
- Unplug and open the small cover, towel and pan underneath. Samsung warns there may be more water than you expect.
- Drain the small hose next to the filter first (LG and Samsung): pull it out, uncap it, let it empty.
- Twist the filter counterclockwise and pull it out. Rinse off the lint and check that the opening is clear.
- Put it back firmly, clockwise, cap the hose and close the cover. Samsung warns that a filter not properly closed can leak.
How often: at least monthly or about every 40 washes (Samsung Canada; the WF45T6000 manual says 5 or 6 times a year), every few months or as needed (Whirlpool). Some Whirlpool models hide the filter behind the storage drawer, and some have none you can clean.
Careful: Water pours out as soon as the filter opens, so never open it with water in the drum. Never run the washer without the filter or with it half screwed in: LG warns it can leak or malfunction.
The drain hose, the standpipe and the floor drain
A sewer or rotten-egg smell while the washer drains usually comes from the plumbing. Every drain has a trap, a bend that holds water to block sewer gas. EPCOR, Edmonton's utility, says a dried-out trap is a common reason for sewer odours. The City of Toronto's fix for a dry floor drain, common in basement laundry rooms: pour in a few litres of clean water.
The washer's hose can also be the cause: LG lists a drain hose that siphons, with water flowing back into the washer, as an odour source. What the manuals ask for:
- Samsung: the hose goes 6 to 8 in. (15 to 20 cm) into the standpipe, the connection must not be airtight, and the standpipe must be at least 18 in. (46 cm) high so the washer doesn't siphon.
- LG: never tape the hose into the drain, because without an air gap water can be siphoned out of the drum. Keep the elbow bracket within 4 in. (10 cm) of the hose end: LG says a longer tail can let mould spread to the inside of the washer.

Trap full, hose right, and the sewer smell keeps coming back? EPCOR points to sewer gas building up in the plumbing or venting system: that's a job for a plumber, not a cleaner.
Then clean the drum and outer tub
With the seal, drawer and drain sorted, what's left is residue on the drum and the outer tub, which you can't reach by hand.
- Empty the drum and drop one BLITZ tablet straight in, never in the drawer.
- Run the hottest cycle, or Tub Clean on an LG.
- For a musty smell, run two in a row the first time (our suggestion), a new tablet each time. LG itself recommends Tub Clean three weeks in a row for musty smells.
- Wipe the seal and leave the door open to dry.
- Repeat every two weeks. A box of 24 tablets is about a year.
On a Samsung, Self Clean takes liquid chlorine bleach only, so run BLITZ in a separate hot cycle (see our Samsung Self Clean guide). LG owners: how to run Tub Clean and clear the tCL message.

Habits that keep the smell away
- Use less detergent and softener. LG says to use HE detergent, less than half of the maximum for an average load: too much leaves residue that contributes to odours. Samsung Canada lists too much detergent or softener among the causes of washer odour.
- Take wet laundry out right away. Whirlpool says wet clothes left in the drum can lead to mildew, in the clothes and the washer.
- Leave the door and drawer open (LG says overnight, Whirlpool between loads). With small children or pets, close the laundry room instead.
- Wash warm or hot now and then. Samsung Canada lists washing only in cold water as a cause of odour.
| When | What to do on a front loader |
|---|---|
| Every load | Right dose of HE detergent, laundry out right away, door and drawer left open |
| Every week | Wipe and dry the bottom fold of the door seal |
| Every two weeks | One BLITZ tablet in the empty drum, hottest cycle |
| Every month | Wash the drawer and its recess, clean the pump filter |
| Basement laundry | A few litres of water down a dry floor drain |

When it isn't the washer, or needs a technician
- Rotten eggs from every tap: it's the water. Health Canada says hydrogen sulphide gives water a rotten-egg odour and is most common in groundwater, so think of it if you're on a well, and have the water tested. Only the hot water smells? Have a plumber check the water heater.
- Burning smell or smoke: Samsung says to unplug the washer right away and contact service. Don't run another cycle.
- A brand-new washer that smells of rubber: LG says that's normal and fades after a few cycles.
- Water left in the drum, or leaks: call a technician.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get rid of the musty smell in my front-load washer?
Clean the seal fold, the drawer recess and the pump filter by hand. Then run two hot cycles back to back with one BLITZ tablet each, leave the door open, and use one tablet every two weeks after that.
Why does my washer smell like sewer or rotten eggs?
If you smell it while the washer drains, it's usually a dry trap in the floor drain or standpipe, or a drain hose that siphons. Pour a few litres of water into the floor drain and check that the hose isn't sealed into the pipe. If every tap smells of rotten eggs, it's the water itself.
How often should I clean the drain pump filter?
Samsung Canada says at least once a month or about every 40 washes, Whirlpool every few months or as needed. Clean it sooner if the washer drains slowly or shows a drain code (OE on LG, 5C on Samsung).
Can I use vinegar or bleach to get rid of the smell?
Never together: Health Canada warns never to mix bleach with other cleaning products, vinegar included. Some makers also advise against vinegar in their washers. One BLITZ tablet in the empty drum does the job: see washing machine cleaner vs vinegar.
