Back-to-School Cleaning Checklist: A One-Weekend Family Reset
Give the house one weekend before school starts (late August in most of Québec): kitchen and lunch gear Saturday morning, laundry and sports gear Saturday afternoon, entryway and appliances Sunday, then a 15-minute family meeting to hand out chores by age. Wash lunch bags after every use, as Health Canada advises. For the two busiest machines, one BLITZ tablet in the washer and one in the dishwasher every two weeks: the Essentials Kit covers both for about a year, $43.95.

When to do back-to-school cleaning: the one-weekend plan
The weekend before the first day is the sweet spot. The date depends on your school service centre: at Montréal's CSSDM, for example, primary students went back on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
Skip the whole-house deep clean. Focus on the four places the school routine hits every day: the kitchen, the laundry, the front door and the appliances behind them. Our plan splits the work into five blocks of about two hours (our estimate, less with a teenager helping).

The same plan as a checklist: print it, or screenshot it for whoever is helping.

How to clean lunch boxes, containers and water bottles
Health Canada's rule: wash lunch bags with hot, soapy water after each use, and never reuse sandwich bags, foil or plastic wrap. Pack an ice pack too: food should never sit in the danger zone between 4 °C and 60 °C.
- Lay it all out. Every lunch box, container, lid, bottle and ice pack on the counter. Match containers with lids and recycle the orphans: a container that doesn't seal leaks in a backpack.
- Take bottles apart. Lid, straw and, if the instructions allow, the silicone gasket, where milk and juice hide. Hydro Flask recommends warm, soapy water and a bottle brush.
- Read the label before the dishwasher. Hydro Flask says its powder-coated bottles are dishwasher safe and its caps and lids top-rack safe. Thermos says most of its products are top-rack safe but recommends washing by hand, and never bleach. No dishwasher symbol? Wash by hand.
- Insulated bags: wipe, unless the label says otherwise. Hydro Flask says to wipe its insulated tote with a damp cloth and let it air-dry, never in the washer or dryer.
- Dry open, store open. Our suggestion: let bottles and containers dry with the lids off, so no moisture gets trapped inside.

Tip: Give lunch gear one bin in a low cupboard. Kids can pack from it, and a missing lid shows up on Sunday night, not at 7:45 on Monday.
Plastic containers go on the top rack, away from the heating element; for the rest, see how to load a dishwasher for better cleaning.
Sports gear and smelly uniforms: the laundry routine
Get gear out of the bag right away, then wash it inside out, in cold water, without fabric softener. That's Whirlpool's advice for activewear: hang damp clothes to dry until wash day, skip softener (it coats the fibres and cuts their wicking), and air-dry synthetics, since high dryer heat can damage stretch fabrics. The care label always wins, and pads and helmets follow their maker's instructions.
- Don't overload. LG says to load clothes loosely: the drum can be full, but not tightly packed.
- Leave the door open after the load. LG and Samsung Canada both say to leave the door and the detergent drawer open so the inside dries.
When uniforms still smell after washing, look at the washer. Whirlpool lists an overloaded washer and a washing machine that needs cleaning among the reasons odours linger. Every washer maker we checked asks for a drum cleaning at least monthly, and Whirlpool says frequent use may call for more: at 10 loads a week, LG's 30-wash reminder comes every three weeks (our math).
One BLITZ tablet in the empty drum every two weeks, on a hot cycle, stays ahead of it. Full schedule: how often you should clean your washing machine. Still smelly after a clean? See the 8 spots a cleaning cycle misses.
An entryway system for boots and backpacks
Our entryway system has four parts:
- One hook per child, at their height, for the backpack and coat, marked with a name or a colour.
- One bin per child for caps and gloves now, tuques and mittens by November.
- A boot tray with a raised edge. It looks unnecessary in August, but it keeps slush and salty water off the floor all winter.
- One basket for school papers: agenda, permission slips, notices. A parent empties it every evening.
The habit that makes it work: bags get unpacked at the door. Lunch box to the counter, papers to the basket, gym clothes to the hamper.
Weekly chores kids can do, by age
The Triple P parenting program says chores help kids learn life skills such as time management, perseverance and problem-solving. It suggests starting with one, two or three simple jobs a week on a chart everyone can see.

For the school year, we add one job for every school-age child: empty your lunch box on the counter when you get home, so containers don't spend the night in a backpack.
Careful: Keep cleaning products with the adults. Health Canada warns that children can mistake laundry detergent packets for food or toys and says to store them out of sight and reach. We treat cleaners and appliance cleaning tablets, BLITZ included, the same way.
Expect slow and imperfect at first: Triple P's point is participation, not perfection. Hold the family meeting when everyone is rested and calm.
The appliance check after a busy summer
After a summer of beach towels and iced coffee, give three machines a cleaning cycle before the school routine starts. Your part takes about 15 minutes.
- Dishwasher. Take out the filter at the bottom of the tub, rinse it and brush it. Whirlpool says to clean it at least monthly, every two weeks for large families. Then put one BLITZ Dishwasher Cleaner tablet in the detergent compartment of the empty dishwasher and run a normal cycle.
- Washer. Wipe the door seal and rinse the detergent drawer, then put one tablet straight into the empty drum (not the drawer) and run the hottest cycle or Tub Clean. Our suggestion if it's been months: a second cycle with a fresh tablet.
- Coffee maker. Keurig says to descale every 3 to 6 months, and its K-Supreme guide says to descale after storage, so a brewer back from the cottage is due. Dissolve one BLITZ Coffee Maker Cleaner tablet in the reservoir water, run a cleaning or descaling cycle, then rinse with fresh water. Steps by model: how to descale a Keurig.

Keeping it going: the school-year routine
The reset lasts only if a few habits follow it. Our routine:
| How often | What to do |
|---|---|
| Every school day | Bags unpacked at the door, lunch boxes emptied and washed, wet sports gear hung to dry |
| Every week | Chore chart jobs, entryway bins emptied, sports bag aired out, washer door seal wiped (front loaders) |
| Every two weeks | One BLITZ tablet in the washer and one in the dishwasher; coffee maker cleaned |
| Every month | Dishwasher filter (every two weeks in a large family), washer drawer, bottle gaskets checked |

Frequently asked questions
When should I do back-to-school cleaning?
The weekend before your school's first day, which in most of Québec falls in late August. One weekend is enough if you stick to the kitchen, the laundry, the entryway and the appliances.
How do I clean a smelly water bottle?
Take it apart, wash every piece in warm, soapy water with a bottle brush (Hydro Flask's advice), then let it dry with the lid off. Never use bleach on a Thermos product: Thermos says so in its FAQ.
Can lunch containers go in the dishwasher?
Only if the label says so, usually on the top rack. Hydro Flask bottles and lids qualify; Thermos recommends hand washing even for its top-rack-safe products.
How do I get the smell out of sports uniforms?
Take them out of the bag right away, then wash them inside out, in cold water and without fabric softener, as Whirlpool advises for activewear. Don't overload the washer. If the smell keeps coming back, clean the washer itself: Whirlpool lists a washer that needs cleaning among the causes.
What chores can a 6-year-old do?
Triple P's examples for school-age kids: pack their school bag, put clean laundry away, vacuum or sweep a bigger area, make their bed. Start with one to three jobs a week, and keep cleaning products with adults.
