How to Descale a Keurig, Model by Model (and the Descale Light)
Empty the reservoir, pour in a whole bottle of Keurig descaling solution plus a bottle of water, brew it through with no pod, then rinse with fresh water. On a K-Supreme, K-Slim or K-Express, start Descale Mode first (plugged in and off, hold 8oz and 12oz for 3 seconds) and rinse until the DESCALE light goes off. On a K-Classic, K-Elite or Keurig 2.0, let the solution soak 30 minutes, then run at least 12 rinse brews. Keurig says every 3 to 6 months. Easier with BLITZ: one tablet in the pod holder, no pod, one largest-size brew, then a fresh-water rinse, for about $1.04 a clean instead of $19.94 a bottle.

Which descale method does your Keurig use?
Keurig brewers descale in one of two ways. Newer models have a Descale Mode you start with a button combination, and a DESCALE light that only turns off when the full procedure is done. Older and compact models have no mode: the solution soaks inside the brewer for 30 minutes, then you rinse.

How to descale a Keurig with Descale Mode (K-Supreme, K-Slim, K-Express)
You need: a large ceramic mug (not a paper cup), a bottle of descaling solution, fresh water and a sink. No pod in the pod holder. Time: about 20 minutes.
- Empty the reservoir. If you use a Keurig water filter, take it out.
- Add the solution, then water. Pour in the whole bottle, then fill the empty bottle with water and pour that in too. Put the mug on the drip tray.
- Enter Descale Mode. With the brewer plugged in and powered off, hold 8oz and 12oz together for 3 seconds.
- Brew until ADD WATER. When the brew button flashes, press it. Pour each mug into the sink and repeat until the ADD WATER light comes on.
- Rinse until DESCALE goes off. Empty and rinse the reservoir, fill it to MAX with fresh water and keep brewing. When the DESCALE light turns off, the brewer has left Descale Mode and is ready.

Model differences: on a K-Express, K-Iced or Barista Bar, every brew is the 12oz button; on a K-Express Essentials or K-Iced Essentials, enter the mode with 6oz and 10oz and brew with 8oz. On a K-Duo Hot & Iced (Gen 2), put the carafe on the heating plate as well as a mug on the drip tray.
SMART models (K-Supreme SMART, K-Supreme Plus SMART, K-Café SMART)
When the Descale notification appears, press the left arrow, choose CONTINUE and follow the screen. To descale before the reminder, press both arrows at once to open Settings, then choose Descale Mode. The brewer dispenses 12 oz at a time; rinse with fresh water until the screen says DESCALE COMPLETE.
Careful: Some foam is normal. But if a heavily scaled brewer gives a trickle or nothing, then the sound of air, Keurig says to turn it off and unplug it, empty and rinse the reservoir, refill it with fresh water, then plug it back in and repeat the fresh-water rinse. If it keeps happening, leave it unplugged for at least 30 minutes first.
How to descale a Keurig K-Classic, K-Elite or Keurig 2.0 (no Descale Mode)
These brewers have no mode to enter: the solution works during a 30-minute soak, and a long rinse clears it out. Time: about 45 minutes.
- Power off and fill. Empty the reservoir and take out the water filter. Pour in the whole bottle of solution, then a bottle of water. Turn the brewer back on.
- Brew the solution through. Run largest-size brews with no pod, emptying the mug each time, until the add water light comes on ("More Water Please" on a Keurig 2.0 screen). On a K-Elite, Keurig's guide has you press HOT WATER, then the largest size.
- Soak 30 minutes. Leave the brewer on. Then discard what's left in the reservoir and rinse it well.
- Rinse at least 12 times. Fill with fresh water to MAX and run at least 12 largest-size brews, refilling the reservoir at least once.

Keurig Canada no longer sells the 2.0 line, but its K200 and K500 guides use this same method.
K-Mini and K-Mini Plus
The K-Mini's reservoir holds one cup at a time, so Keurig uses a third of the bottle per brew. Allow about 45 minutes.
- First brew. With the brewer on, pour one-third of the bottle (4.6 oz, about 136 mL) into the reservoir and top up with fresh water to the fill line. Lift and lower the handle with no pod, press BREW and pour the mug into the sink.
- Soak. Repeat with another third, but power off as soon as the solution starts to dispense. Let it stand at least 30 minutes, then power on and brew the rest out.
- Rinse. Repeat step 1 with fresh water only, at the largest size: three times in all, per Keurig's K-Mini guide. Run more if you still taste the solution.
How often should you descale a Keurig?
- Every 3 to 6 months, says Keurig Canada, and every 3 months if your water is high in minerals. The K-Supreme, K-Slim and K-Express guides say every 3 months.
- When the brewer asks. The K-Express and K-Express Essentials remind you after every 250 brews. Keurig's reminder tracks how much water has gone through; postpone it and it comes back 6 weeks later.
- After storage. The K-Supreme guide says to descale a stored brewer before you use it again.
Hard water scales a brewer faster: check how hard the water is in your city. Keurig suggests filtered or bottled water and a water filter changed every 2 months, but never distilled water: with no minerals, the brewer may not detect water and the add water light stays on.
Keurig descale light still on? What to check

- Descale Mode was never started. Keurig says the full procedure must be completed to turn off the light; solution run through a regular brew won't reset it.
- The rinse stopped too early. The light goes off at the end of the fresh-water rinse, not after the solution. Refill and keep brewing.
- The reminder was postponed. It comes back until the brewer is actually descaled. On a Keurig 2.0, if "Time to descale the brewer!" stays, the K200 and K500 guides say to repeat the procedure.
- K-Elite or K-Classic: Keurig's guides give no reset step. Do all 12 rinses; if it stays on, call Keurig Canada at 1-800-361-5628.
- Still a short cup? Clear the exit needle with a straightened paper clip. If two full descales don't fix it, Keurig says to contact Customer Service.
What to descale a Keurig with
- Our pick, BLITZ Coffee Maker Cleaner: one citric acid tablet per descale (Keurig's own listing says its solution uses citric acid too), at about $1.04 a clean. The full math is in BLITZ vs the Keurig bottle; other options are ranked in the best coffee maker descalers in Canada.
- Keurig Descaling Solution: a whole 14 oz bottle per descale, $19.94 at keurig.ca on October 20, 2026 ($16.95 with Auto-Delivery).
- Vinegar: Keurig Canada says no, because the acidity of vinegar isn't standardized and may damage the brewer. Details in coffee maker descaler vs vinegar.
How to descale a Keurig with BLITZ
BLITZ Coffee Maker Cleaner breaks down mineral scale and coffee oil residue in one cycle. In drip and espresso machines the tablet goes in the water tank, but in a pod brewer like a Keurig it goes in the pod holder, as the product page FAQ explains.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh water and take out the water filter if there is one.
- Put one tablet in the pod holder, with no pod, and close the handle.
- Brew at the largest cup size into a large ceramic mug.
- Discard and wipe. Pour the water into the sink and wipe off any loosened residue around the pod holder.
- Rinse. Run at least one more full brew with fresh water at the largest size, and more if the water still tastes like the cleaner. With heavy scale, run a second cycle with a new tablet first.

The DESCALE light on Descale Mode models follows Keurig's own procedure. With BLITZ, watch the mugs: in the product page photos below, the first cycle came out yellowish and the final rinse ran clear. Rinse until yours runs clear too.

Why BLITZ for a Keurig
- About $1.04 a clean: $24.95 for 24 tablets, versus $16.95 to $19.94 for the bottle each Keurig descale uses (keurig.ca, October 20, 2026).
- One tablet, and the same box works in drip and espresso machines.
- A year in one box at two cleanings a month, and each tablet also breaks down coffee oil residue, not just scale.
- Rated 4.8 out of 5 (14 reviews) on goblitzclean.com.
- A Québec company in Laval, with service in French and English. Free shipping in Canada from $40 ($7.95 under), 10% back in store credit, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and most orders in 2 to 3 business days. Also on Amazon.ca, without the store credit.
Cleaning the rest of your Keurig
Descaling only deals with the inside. Keurig says the K-Cup pod holder and its funnel are dishwasher safe, but the reservoir and its lid are not: wash those by hand. Clear the exit needle with a straightened paper clip, wipe the outside with a damp, soapy cloth, and never put the brewer in water.
The difference between cleaning and descaling is in coffee maker cleaning vs. descaling. If your coffee tastes off after a descale, see bitter coffee after cleaning: usually it needs more rinse brews.
Frequently asked questions
Can I descale my Keurig with vinegar?
Keurig Canada says no: the acidity of vinegar isn't always standardized, and it may damage the brewer. Use a citric acid descaler instead: one BLITZ tablet in the pod holder, with no pod, then a fresh-water rinse, for about $1.04.
How long does it take to descale a Keurig?
15 to 20 minutes with Descale Mode (K-Supreme, K-Slim, K-Express), about 45 minutes on a K-Classic, K-Elite, Keurig 2.0 or K-Mini because of the 30-minute soak, and about 75 minutes on a first-generation K-Duo.
Why is my Keurig still saying descale after I descaled it?
Usually Descale Mode was never started, or the fresh-water rinse stopped too early: the light only turns off after the full procedure, rinse included. On a Keurig 2.0, Keurig says to repeat the procedure if the message stays.
Can I use a cleaning tablet in my Keurig instead of Keurig's solution?
Yes: a BLITZ tablet goes in the pod holder, with no pod, for one largest-size brew, then a fresh-water rinse. It's citric acid, like Keurig's own solution, at about $1.04 a clean instead of $19.94 a bottle. Judge it by the rinse water rather than the DESCALE light, which follows Keurig's procedure.
How many rinses after descaling a Keurig?
On Descale Mode models, keep rinsing until the DESCALE light turns off. On a K-Classic, K-Elite or Keurig 2.0, at least 12 largest-size brews; on a K-Mini, three. Add one or two more if you still taste the solution.
My Keurig barely brews after descaling. Is that normal?
A heavily scaled brewer may not fill properly. Unplug it, rinse and refill the reservoir with water, then repeat the fresh-water rinse. If two full descales don't fix a short cup, Keurig says to call Customer Service.
