Black Shower Caulk and Grout: Remove the Stains or Recaulk?
Black on shower caulk and grout is usually mould staining the surface, sometimes just mildew or soap scum that washes off. Scrub with dish soap and water, dry the joint, then run a line of gel stain remover such as BLITZ Mold Stain Remover, leave it 3 to 5 hours and wipe it off. If the caulk is still black after two rounds, or it's peeling or cracked, the mould is inside or behind it: remove the old silicone, recaulk and respect the cure time on the tube.

What the black on shower caulk and grout is
Mostly mould, growing where water sits. LePage, a Canadian sealant brand, says mould often shows up where water sits in a bathroom seam, especially corners and long edges: the tub bead, inside corners, the bottom rows of grout.
Three look-alikes clean up differently:
- Mildew: the U.S. EPA says the word means certain kinds of mould, usually flat. It's the grey film a soapy brush takes off.
- Soap scum: soap reacts with the calcium in hard water (USGS), leaving a white or grey film.
- Pink or orange film near the drain: NDSU Extension identifies it as a bacterium, Serratia marcescens, that feeds on soap residue in damp spots. It isn't mould: scrub it off and keep the area dry. BLITZ says its gel lifts pink stains too.

Is the stain on the surface or deep in the caulk?
You can't tell by looking. Test in this order (our method, built on the BLITZ directions):
- Soap test. Scrub with dish soap and a nylon brush. Whatever comes off was surface grime or mildew.
- Gel test. Give the dots that stay one round of gel. If they fade, the stain is in the surface. BLITZ says old, deep stains may need a second round.
- Two-round rule. Still black after round two? The mould has grown into the silicone. BLITZ says it may not come out fully, and replacing the caulk is the real fix.
Skip the tests and recaulk if the bead is peeling, cracked, soft or gapped: that's a failed seal, whatever its colour. Grout is porous cement, so stains sit in it rather than under a skin. Grout that lightens is fine; cracked or crumbling grout needs regrouting.
How to remove black mould stains from shower silicone and grout, step by step
You need: unscented dish soap, a nylon brush, a soft sponge, a towel, gloves, eye protection and a gel stain remover. Time: 4 to 6 hours, mostly waiting (our estimate).
A quick wash comes first so the gel goes onto clean, dry caulk. BLITZ Mold Stain Remover is a thick gel (sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide) that stays on the dark stain for hours instead of running into the tub.
- Scrub and rinse (10 minutes). Nylon brush on grout, soft sponge on silicone.
- Dry it completely (30 minutes or more). Towel, then air-dry with the fan on. BLITZ says the gel sticks to a dry surface.
- Apply a line of gel (2 minutes). Gloves and eye protection on (BLITZ says the gel can irritate skin and eyes), window open or fan running. Shake the bottle and run a line of BLITZ Mold Stain Remover right on the stain. It's thick, so it stays on vertical caulk.
- Leave it 3 to 5 hours. No showers, window open or fan running.
- Wipe, rinse and dry (5 minutes). Damp cloth, clean water, fan on.

| Silicone caulk | Grout | |
|---|---|---|
| Scrub with | A soft sponge. Steel wool and abrasive pads scratch and tear it | A nylon brush. Nothing sharp |
| Watch for | Black after two rounds, peeling or gaps: recaulk | Dark lines on solid grout: gel. Cracks: regrout |

Never mix: never use the gel at the same time as another cleaner, and never with vinegar, ammonia or an acid. Health Canada warns that bleach reacts with them (glass and toilet bowl cleaners included) and releases toxic gases.
- Rinse well between products.
- Exposed? Get fresh air and call your poison centre (in Québec, 1-800-463-5060).
- Full safety rules: mould gel vs bleach spray.
Remove the stain or recaulk?
Judge the bead, not just the colour. Health Canada's bathroom checklist says to repair or replace cracked or damaged caulking and grout around showers and tubs.

A gel round takes a few hours; recaulking takes an afternoon plus a day of cure, so try the gel on sound caulk first. When a bead is past saving, cut it out, clean the joint and the tile edge with the gel, then recaulk.
How to remove old silicone and recaulk a tub or shower
You need: a razor or plastic scraper, a scrub brush, painter's tape (optional), a caulking gun and 100% silicone, which GE recommends for showers.
- Cut and scrape out the old bead. GE says to use a razor blade, putty knife or removal tool. Use plastic on acrylic or fibreglass tubs (our advice). DAP says cured sealant has to be cut or scraped away: get every bit.
- Scrub the joint. GE says a scrub brush beats a wipe. Black left on the tile edge? Gel it as above, then rinse well.
- Let it dry completely. DAP's Canadian data sheet asks for a surface that is clean, dry and free of old caulk. We suggest overnight with the fan on.
- Tape and apply. Tape both sides for a straight edge (our tip). Cut the nozzle at 45 degrees, as GE says, and run one steady bead.
- Smooth it right away with a caulking tool or wet finger, not soap (GE). DAP lists 5 to 15 minutes of working time, depending on the product. Pull the tape before the bead skins over.
Careful: never run new silicone over old caulk or a stain. GE and DAP both say to remove the old sealant first, and LePage says new sealant needs a clean, dry, sound surface to bond well.
How long after caulking can you shower?
"Water-ready" means a splash won't wash the bead out. A full cure takes longer:
| Sealant (maker's directions) | Water-ready | Full cure |
|---|---|---|
| GE Advanced Silicone 2 Kitchen & Bath | 30 minutes | Not listed (GE: most sealants, 24 hours) |
| GE Tub & Tile Silicone 1 | 12 hours (its directions; GE's comparison chart says 24) | Not listed (GE: most sealants, 24 hours) |
| DAP Silicone Plus Kitchen & Bath (Canada) | 30 minutes | 24 hours |
| DAP 100% Silicone Kitchen, Bath & Plumbing (Canada) | 12 hours | 24 hours |
DAP's Silicone Plus sheet gives its times at 22 °C and 50% humidity and says low humidity may slow the cure. Our advice: go by your own tube, and if you have another bathroom, wait the full 24 hours.

How much mould is too much? Health Canada's size guide
A stained caulk bead is a small job. A tub's bead is about 3 m long and 1 cm wide, roughly 0.03 m² (our math). Health Canada's 2023 guide calls 1 m² or less a small area you can clean yourself, with goggles, an N95 mask and gloves.
A single patch over 3 m², or mould that returns after cleaning or hides inside a wall, calls for a qualified professional. Its one-page infographic is stricter (a professional above 1 m²): when in doubt, follow that. The full size guide, medium areas included, is in mould stains in the kitchen.
Mould on the ceiling or walls is a moisture problem, not a caulk stain. The gel isn't for painted drywall, and Health Canada says painting over mould only hides it. Find the cause (weak fan, leak, failed joint). Renting? Health Canada says to talk to your landlord.
Bathroom fan and humidity habits that keep caulk cleaner
From Health Canada's bathroom checklist:
- Run the exhaust fan at least 30 minutes after a shower or bath. A timer switch makes it automatic (our tip).
- Vent it outside, not into the attic, and check that it pulls air. Our test: a square of toilet paper should cling to the grille.
- Squeegee and dry the walls around the tub and shower.
- Keep indoor humidity between 30% and 50%, checked with a hygrometer.
- Fix cracked caulk and leaks promptly: mould can start within 48 hours where moisture stays.
Our additions: leave the curtain or door open, and hang towels outside the tub. Humidity by season is in our cleaning routine for Canadian homes.

Why BLITZ Mold Stain Remover for shower caulk
- A gel made for caulk and grout. It stays on vertical beads and grout lines for 3 to 5 hours instead of running into the tub. Compared with a spray: our Tilex alternative guide.
- One bottle, many beads. A thin line uses about 5 to 10 mL per metre, so 236 mL does roughly 8 to 15 tub caulk lines: $1.59 to $3.17 a line ($24.95 × 15 / 236 and × 30 / 236). Septic-safe, like every BLITZ product.
- Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 13 customers on goblitzclean.com. One wrote that it "stays on the grout lines and caulking instead of running down the surface."

Frequently asked questions
How do I remove black mould from shower silicone?
Wash it with dish soap and water, dry it, apply a gel stain remover for 3 to 5 hours, then wipe and rinse. Still black after a second round? The mould is inside the silicone: cut it out and recaulk.
Why does my shower caulk keep turning black?
Water sits on it after every shower, and stains return fast when mould has grown into old caulk or behind a lifted bead. Run the fan 30 minutes after showering, squeegee, and recaulk failed joints.
How long after caulking can I shower?
It depends on the tube: 30 minutes for GE Advanced Silicone 2 and DAP Silicone Plus, 12 hours for GE Tub & Tile Silicone 1 and DAP 100% Silicone. DAP lists a full cure at 24 hours, which is what we'd wait if you can.
Is black mould in the shower dangerous?
Health Canada links mould and damp homes to eye, nose and throat irritation, coughing and wheezing, and says to clean it up right away. Small patches on caulk are a cleaning job; a large area, or mould that keeps returning, needs a professional.
