Black Mould in the Bathroom and Toilet Rings: How to Remove Them
Quick answer: Black mould in the bathroom usually stains caulk and grout, where water sits. Wash with dish soap, dry, then leave a gel like BLITZ Mold Stain Remover on the stain 3 to 5 hours. A toilet ring needs an acid and a brush.
- Never mix: the gel is bleach, and Health Canada warns bleach reacts with acid toilet cleaners and vinegar.
- Still black after two rounds? The mould is inside the caulk: cut it out and recaulk.
- Toilet ring coming back? A bleach-free BLITZ tank tablet helps keep a new ring from forming.

What causes black mould in the bathroom, and the routine that keeps it down
Water that stays. Mould grows where water sits (the tub bead, corners, the bottom rows of grout), and Health Canada says it can start within 48 hours; it advises 30% to 50% humidity. Toilet rings form the same way, at the waterline.
- After every shower: fan on for at least 30 minutes, then squeegee (Health Canada).
- Every week: bowl cleaner and a long-handled brush; Kohler's K-3394 manual says "at least once a week."
- Every month: check the caulk and the waterline. When the blue water fades: a new BLITZ tank tablet.
- When a stain stays: treat it before it sets in (below).

How to remove black mould from shower caulk and grout
Soap first, gel second. Health Canada says to scrub visible mould off with unscented dish detergent and water; for the stain that stays, dry the joint and leave a line of gel on it 3 to 5 hours. A gel stays on a vertical bead, while the Tilex label says to rinse after 10 minutes.
Careful: BLITZ Mold Stain Remover is a bleach gel. Never use it with another cleaner, vinegar included. Wear gloves and eye protection, with a window open or the fan on.

- Peeling, cracked, or still black after two rounds: recaulk.
- On the ceiling or a wall: a moisture problem. The gel isn't for painted drywall, and Health Canada's infographic says to hire a professional above 1 m².
- Washer door seals and kitchen caulk: the same method, gel on the dry rubber or caulk for 3 to 5 hours. The whole washer is in our washing machine care hub.

How to remove a toilet bowl ring
Touch it with the brush first. Hard and rough is a mineral: close the valve, flush, sponge out the water, apply an acid toilet cleaner or citric acid, then scrub. A soft black, green or pink film only needs a bowl cleaner and a brush.
Skip the pumice stone: Kohler's care guide says no abrasive cleaners. On a well, iron and manganese rings return until the water is treated.

Are toilet tank tablets safe? Pick one without chlorine
Pick one without chlorine. Fluidmaster, which makes replacement flappers, warns against in-tank drop-ins containing bleach or chlorine. BLITZ lists none: cleaning agents, a blue colourant and fragrance.
One BLITZ tablet goes in the tank (not the bowl) and cleans with every flush. It helps keep a new ring from forming and helps prevent limescale, and when the blue water fades, it's time for the next one: 12 tablets in one box, about $2.16 a tablet.

How do I get rid of black mould in the bathroom?
On caulk and grout: wash with dish soap, dry, leave a gel stain remover on for 3 to 5 hours, then wipe. Still black after two rounds? Recaulk. On a ceiling or wall, fix the moisture first, as our black shower caulk guide explains.
Is black mould in the bathroom dangerous?
Health Canada links mould and damp homes to eye, nose and throat irritation, coughing and wheezing, and says to clean it up right away. Small patches on caulk are a cleaning job; a large area, or mould that keeps returning, needs a professional.
How do you get rid of a ring in the toilet bowl?
A hard ring is a mineral: lower the water, apply an acid cleaner or citric acid, then scrub. A hard black one is usually manganese, often from a well, so test the water. Our toilet ring guide gives the fix for each colour.
Are BLITZ products septic-safe?
Yes, every BLITZ product is septic-safe when used as directed, the gel and the tank tablets included. What else to keep out of the tank, and Québec's pumping rules, are in our septic tank guide.
Is BLITZ Mold Stain Remover bleach?
Yes. Its ingredients are sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide, so it's a chlorine bleach gel. Wear gloves and eye protection, air the room, and never mix it with another cleaner (more in mould gel vs bleach spray).
