Holiday Kitchen Cleaning Checklist: Before, During and After Hosting

Short answer

Start two weeks out: self-clean the oven (never the day before) and clean the dishwasher and coffee maker (one BLITZ tablet each). One week out, clear fridge space: a 6.8 kg (15 lb) turkey needs 3 days to thaw in it. On the day, run full loads, keep grease out of the garburator and get food back in the fridge within 2 hours (Health Canada). After: eat leftovers within 2 to 3 days or freeze them, then clean the dishwasher filter and run one cleaning cycle.

Holiday kitchen cleaning countdown at a glance

The trick is timing, not effort: the long jobs go first, when a breakdown can still be fixed, and the day before is staging, not scrubbing. It works for Thanksgiving, Christmas, the Réveillon and Jour de l'An.

Holiday kitchen cleaning countdown: oven, dishwasher and coffee maker 2 weeks before, fridge space 1 week before, a 6.8 kg turkey into the fridge 3 days before, then the day-after reset
The countdown, two weeks before to the day after. Our schedule, built on Health Canada and appliance makers' advice, checked October 20, 2026.

Two weeks before: oven, dishwasher, coffee maker

Self-clean the oven early, never the day before

A self-clean cycle usually runs for hours at very high heat. Whirlpool says the door stays locked until the oven cools and heavy soil means more smoke, so ventilate the kitchen. Our advice is two weeks out: if the cycle trips a fault, there's still time for a repair.

  • Before: take out the racks, broiler pan, cookware and any foil, and wipe up loose spills (Whirlpool).
  • Birds: Whirlpool warns that self-clean fumes can harm some birds. Move them to another closed, well-ventilated room.
  • After: let it cool, then wipe out the leftover ash.

Tip: Bake tourtières and pies on a rimmed baking sheet. Bubbling filling lands on the pan, not the oven floor, and you won't need a second self-clean before New Year's (our tip).

Clean the dishwasher before it works triple shifts

Twist out the filter, wash it in warm soapy water with a soft brush, and put it back. Then put one BLITZ Dishwasher Cleaner tablet in the detergent compartment of the empty dishwasher and run a normal cycle: it breaks down grease and limescale on the walls, racks and spray arms. Already smelling? Start with our five dishwasher odour checks.

Clean the coffee maker before the holiday mornings

Dissolve one BLITZ Coffee Maker Cleaner tablet in the reservoir water, run a cleaning or descaling cycle, then rinse with fresh water until it tastes of nothing; brew one water-only cup the day before guests. If the descale light is on, finish the full procedure: on a Keurig, that's what turns it off. Which one do you need? See cleaning vs descaling.

Coat the stainless so fingerprints wipe off

BLITZ Ceramic Coating leaves an invisible water-repellent finish, so fingerprints and drips wipe away faster, for up to 12 months. Spray, buff with the included microfibre cloth, let it cure about 2 hours. On a "fingerprint-resistant" finish, check your maker's care page first. Job How Hands-on (our estimate)
Oven Self-clean per the manual, racks out 15 minutes, then hours of waiting
Dishwasher Filter by hand, then 1 tablet, empty, normal cycle 10 minutes
Coffee maker 1 tablet in the reservoir, cleaning cycle, rinse 5 minutes, plus rinses
Stainless doors Ceramic coating, buff, 2 hours to cure 15 minutes

One week before: make fridge space (and plan the turkey)

Health Canada says to keep the fridge at 4 °C or colder and the freezer at -18 °C or colder, and to avoid overstocking the fridge so cool air can circulate. A party fridge is usually both too full and opened every five minutes, so make room now.

  • Empty one shelf: toss old jars and sauces, wipe the shelves and drawers with warm soapy water, and dry them.
  • Check the temperature with a fridge thermometer, not the dial.
  • Raw meat goes on the bottom shelf, sealed, so it can't drip on anything (Health Canada).
  • Count the thawing days. Health Canada says the fridge is the safest way to thaw a turkey, at about 24 hours per 2.5 kg: a 6.8 kg (15 lb) bird needs 72 hours. Cook it right after it thaws.
Health Canada holiday food safety numbers: fridge at 4 °C or colder, 2 hours on the table, leftovers within 2 to 3 days, 24 hours of fridge thawing per 2.5 kg of turkey, 82 °C and 74 °C

Cooking temperatures: Health Canada lists 82 °C for a whole turkey, 74 °C for stuffing and reheated leftovers, and 71 °C for ground pork, so a classic pork tourtière needs 71 °C in the centre (74 °C with ground game). Baked ahead and reheated, it counts as leftovers: 74 °C. A digital thermometer settles it.

The day before: stage the kitchen

No deep cleaning today: the goal is empty machines and empty bins. Print the list and check it off.

Printable day-before holiday kitchen checklist: fridge at 4 °C with a free shelf, empty dishwasher and rinsed filter, garburator cleaned, a jar for fat, coffee maker rinsed
Print it: twelve boxes in four zones. Our list, based on Health Canada, Whirlpool, Bosch and InSinkErator advice, checked October 20, 2026.
  • A jar by the stove for roasting fat and pan drippings, so nothing greasy goes down the sink.
  • Stuffing plan: Québec's government says not to stuff the turkey the day before. Health Canada says to stuff it loosely just before roasting, or bake the stuffing on its own to 74 °C.
  • Stainless: warm water and mild soap along the grain, dried with microfibre. Whirlpool says no paper towels, steel wool or bleach on its fingerprint-resistant stainless.

The day of: dishwasher, garburator and the 2-hour rule

Run the dishwasher full, and scrape instead of rinsing

Natural Resources Canada says to run full loads and that you can skip pre-rinsing: scrape and load. For a load that will sit overnight, it suggests the rinse setting. Before each cycle, run the sink's hot tap until it's hot (Whirlpool and KitchenAid).

Keep a hand-wash bin. Bosch lists wood, cast iron, aluminium, copper, non-stick pans, thin plastics and hand-painted or printed glass as not recommended for the dishwasher: grandma's platter and the cast-iron pan stay out. For rack-by-rack tips, see how to load a dishwasher.

Go easy on the garburator

InSinkErator's manual says no grease or fat (put it in a jar, then the trash), no hot water while grinding, and no large amounts of peels or eggshells at once. GE adds large bones and fibrous food to the avoid list. Cleaning it is covered in how to clean a garburator safely.

Garburator rules after a holiday meal: cold water and small scraps are fine; roasting-pan fat, the turkey carcass, a whole pot of potato peels and corn husks go in the trash

Careful: At the chalet on a septic system, Québec's environment ministry advises against using a garburator at all: it sends extra solids to the tank. Scraps go to the compost or the trash there.

The 2-hour rule, Réveillon edition

Health Canada says to throw out food left at room temperature for more than two hours, and a Réveillon buffet that runs past midnight blows through that easily. Put out smaller platters, refill with a clean platter rather than topping up the old one, and keep hot dishes in a slow cooker, cold ones on crushed ice (Health Canada).

The day after: leftovers and the kitchen reset

  1. Leftovers first (15 minutes). Take the meat off the bone, split it into small portions in shallow containers, and store turkey apart from stuffing and gravy, as Health Canada advises. Label the date.
  2. Roasting pan (5 minutes). Let the fat set, scrape it into the trash, then soak the pan.
  3. Dishwasher reset (10 minutes, plus a cycle). After heavy loads the filter is full of grease. Clean it by hand (Whirlpool: every two weeks for big households), then run one BLITZ tablet in the empty dishwasher.
  4. Garburator (2 minutes). Run cold water and the unit to clear what's left. If it smells, a BLITZ Disposal Cleaner tablet foams through the grinding chamber; it won't clear a blocked drain.
  5. Fridge and fronts (10 minutes). Wipe shelf spills, toss what won't be eaten, wipe the stainless.

How long are holiday leftovers good? Health Canada's holiday page says 2 to 3 days in the fridge, or freeze them right away. Its general storage chart allows 3 to 4 days for cooked poultry; for a crowded party fridge, we go with the shorter one. Réveillon leftovers won't last until Jour de l'An: freeze what you'll serve again.

What BLITZ takes care of (and what it doesn't)

Three of the jobs above take one step with BLITZ, and the Kitchen Kit puts them in one box for $69.95, $17.94 less than buying them separately:

  • Dishwasher Cleaner (24 tablets): one before you host, one after. Rated 5.0 out of 5 (15 reviews) on goblitzclean.com.
  • Coffee Maker Cleaner (24 tablets): for drip, pod (including K-Cup) and espresso machines. Rated 4.8 out of 5 (14 reviews).
  • Ceramic Coating (236 mL with a microfibre cloth): fingerprints and drips wipe off faster, for up to 12 months. Rated 4.9 out of 5 (16 reviews).

Each box of tablets lasts about a year at one every two weeks, so the kit covers next year's holidays too. It doesn't clean the oven or the fridge; garburator tablets are sold separately. Washing tablecloths too? The Whole Home Kit adds 24 washer tablets for $89.95.

BLITZ is a Québec company based in Laval, with service in French and English, and every product is septic-safe. Free shipping in Canada from $40, most orders in 2 to 3 business days, 10% back in store credit and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Our suggestion: order a week before the countdown starts.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I clean the kitchen before hosting?

Two weeks for the oven, dishwasher and coffee maker, one week for the fridge, three days for thawing a 6.8 kg turkey, and the day before for staging (our schedule).

Should I self-clean my oven before Thanksgiving or Christmas?

Yes, about two weeks ahead, never the day before: the cycle takes hours, the door stays locked until the oven cools, and a very dirty oven smokes more (Whirlpool).

How long can food sit out at a holiday party?

Two hours at room temperature, then Health Canada says to throw it away. Refill from the fridge with clean platters.

How long do turkey and tourtière leftovers keep?

Health Canada's holiday advice is 2 to 3 days in the fridge, or freeze them right away. Reheat to 74 °C, gravy to a rolling boil.

Can turkey bones or grease go down the garburator?

No. InSinkErator says no grease or fat, and GE says to avoid large bones. Small plate scraps with cold water are fine; the carcass and the pan fat go in the trash.

Can I run the dishwasher cleaner with the holiday dishes?

No. A BLITZ tablet goes in the empty dishwasher on a normal cycle, without dishes or detergent: once before the party, once after.
