Keurig Descaling Solution Alternative: BLITZ Tablets vs the Keurig Bottle
Keurig's own directions pour a whole bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution into each descale, so each one costs $15.99 to $19.94 in Canada (regular prices, October 20, 2026). A BLITZ Coffee Maker Cleaner tablet uses the same acid, citric acid, goes in the pod holder of your Keurig and costs about $1.04 (24 for $24.95), with coffee oil residue on the label too. We pick BLITZ: one tablet, 24 descales in one box.
Which should you pick?

- A Québec company in Laval, with service in French and English. Free shipping from $40, 10% back in store credit and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Also on Amazon.ca, without the store credit.

How much a Keurig descale costs in Canada
Keurig's descaling page and guides say to "Pour the entire bottle of Keurig® Descaling Solution" into the reservoir, so one bottle is one descale (a K-Mini uses two-thirds of it, about $10.66 at $15.99). Regular prices for the 14 oz (400 mL) bottle on October 20, 2026:
- keurig.ca: $19.94 one-time purchase ($16.95 with Auto-Delivery, a subscription). Free shipping over $55.
- Amazon.ca: $15.99, sold and shipped by Amazon.ca.
- Canadian Tire: $15.99.
- BLITZ: $24.95 for 24 tablets at goblitzclean.com and on Amazon.ca: $24.95 ÷ 24 = about $1.04 a descale.

Keurig Canada says to descale every 3 to 6 months. Over a year, at our math:
- Every 3 months (4 descales): Keurig $63.96 (Amazon.ca or Canadian Tire) to $79.76 (keurig.ca). BLITZ 4 × $1.04 = $4.16.
- BLITZ's own schedule: twice a month for 1 to 2 cups a day, to clear coffee oils as well as scale. That's one $24.95 box a year, still less than two Keurig bottles.

One BLITZ box ships for $7.95 (free from $40), so a single box delivered works out to about $1.37 a descale; two boxes ship free. Prices move, so check before you buy.

How Keurig says to use its bottle
Every Keurig method starts the same way: empty the reservoir, take out the water filter, pour in the whole bottle, then fill the empty bottle with water and add that too. No pod, a large ceramic mug. What follows depends on the model:
| Your Keurig | Descale cycle | Time |
|---|---|---|
| K-Supreme, K-Slim, K-Express, K-Café Essentials | Start Descale Mode (off, hold 8oz + 12oz for 3 s; 6oz + 10oz on a K-Express Essentials), brew until ADD WATER, rinse until DESCALE goes off | 15 to 20 min |
| K-Classic, K-Elite, K-Select, Keurig 2.0 | No mode: largest brews until the add water light, 30-minute soak, then at least 12 fresh-water brews | About 45 min |
| K-Mini, K-Mini Plus | Two brews of a third of the bottle (4.6 oz each), the second left to soak 30 minutes, then 3 fresh-water brews. Uses two-thirds of the bottle | About 45 min |
How often: "every 3 to 6 months," says Keurig Canada, and every 3 months with hard water. The K-Express also reminds you after every 250 brews. Button combinations for every model and a DESCALE light that won't turn off are covered in how to descale a Keurig, model by model.
How to use a BLITZ tablet in a Keurig
The BLITZ product page FAQ is clear on placement: in a pod machine like a Keurig, the tablet goes in the pod holder, at the largest cup size. (In drip and espresso machines it goes in the water tank instead.)
- Fill the reservoir with fresh water and take out the water filter if there is one.
- Put one tablet in the pod holder, with no pod, and close the handle.
- Brew at the largest cup size into a large ceramic mug.
- Discard and wipe. Pour the water out and wipe off any loosened residue around the pod holder.
- Rinse. Run one more full brew with fresh water, and more if you still taste the cleaner. With heavy scale, run a second cycle with a new tablet first.

Judge by the water. In the product page photos below, the first cycle came out yellowish and the final rinse ran clear.

What's in each one
- Keurig Descaling Solution: the Amazon.ca listing names citric acid, and keurig.ca's product data for the bottle (in the page code, not shown as text on the page) lists "Uses Natural Citric Acid" and "Odorless." We found no full ingredient list or safety data sheet from Keurig.
- BLITZ Coffee Maker Cleaner: citric acid, sodium carbonate and sodium lauryl glutamate, per the product page. The tablet is sold to break down coffee oil residue as well as mineral scale.
Same acid, so a BLITZ tablet does the bottle's job, its label covers coffee oil residue too, and it costs about $1.04 instead of $15.99 or more. Why citric acid instead of vinegar: citric acid vs. vinegar for appliance cleaning.
Why not just use vinegar in a Keurig?
Keurig itself warns against it. From the Keurig Canada FAQ, checked October 20, 2026: "The acidity in vinegar is not always standardized, therefore, you may actually be damaging your coffee maker by using a vinegar solution."
A BLITZ tablet is a set dose of citric acid, the same acid as Keurig's bottle: one tablet per descale, with no vinegar smell. Why citric acid works better: coffee maker descaler vs vinegar.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a different descaler in my Keurig?
Yes. A citric acid tablet like BLITZ descales a Keurig: one tablet in the pod holder with no pod, one largest-size brew, then a fresh-water rinse. About $1.04 a descale instead of a $15.99 to $19.94 bottle.
What is Keurig Descaling Solution made of?
Citric acid: the Amazon.ca listing names it, and keurig.ca's product data (in the page code, not shown on the page) says "Uses Natural Citric Acid." Keurig publishes no full ingredient list. BLITZ uses citric acid too, with sodium carbonate and sodium lauryl glutamate.
How often should I clean my Keurig with BLITZ?
BLITZ suggests twice a month for 1 to 2 cups a day, to clear coffee oils as well as scale, so one box of 24 lasts a year. Button steps for each model are in how to descale a Keurig.
