How to Clean and Descale a Coffee Maker

Quick answer: To clean and descale a coffee maker, wash the removable parts weekly and descale the inside every 1 to 6 months, sooner with hard water. One BLITZ tablet does both jobs in one cycle.

  • Pod machine (Keurig): tablet in the empty pod holder, brew the largest cup, then a fresh-water rinse.
  • Drip or espresso: tablet in the water tank, a cycle with no coffee, then a fresh-water rinse.

How often to clean and descale a coffee maker

Cleaning removes coffee oils from the parts you can wash; descaling removes mineral scale from the lines and heater. For 1 to 2 cups a day:

When What to do
Every brew Throw out the pod or grounds; rinse the basket.
Every week Wash the carafe, basket and pod holder in warm, soapy water.
Every 2 weeks One BLITZ tablet for scale and coffee oils inside.
Every 2 months Change the water filter, if you have one.
Every 1 to 6 months Run the machine's descale mode when it asks (Keurig: 3 to 6 months; Nespresso: 3 months or 300 capsules).

Hard water means the short end of the range. Montréal averaged 117 mg/L in 2024 (moderately hard). Check your city's water hardness, and descale sooner if brewing slows or a white film shows up.

How to clean and descale a coffee maker, step by step

Most makers follow this order; only the start button changes by brand.

  1. Empty it. No pod or grounds; take out any water filter.
  2. Add the cleaner. A BLITZ tablet in the water tank (drip, espresso) or the empty pod holder (pod machines).
  3. Run the cycle: descale mode, or a full brew with no coffee.
  4. Rinse. Pour out the water, wipe off loosened residue, then run one full cycle of fresh water. A maker's own descaler may ask for more rinses.

Why does my coffee taste bitter?

Start with a one-minute test: brew plain water into a white mug.

  • Tinted or tastes of old coffee: clean and descale the machine.
  • Sour or vinegary right after a clean: cleaner is left inside, so keep rinsing.
  • Clean water: the machine is fine; look at the beans and the grind.
