Nespresso Descaling Kit Alternative: BLITZ vs Nespresso in Canada
Yes, you can replace it. BLITZ costs about $1.04 a descale (24 tablets for $24.95) against $6.50 for a Nespresso sachet ($13.00 for 2 on nespresso.com/ca, October 20, 2026). BLITZ says its tablet works in any Nespresso, Vertuo included: one tablet in the pod holder, no capsule. The same box covers your drip, Keurig and espresso machines. Never use vinegar.
Which should you pick?
We pick BLITZ: about $1.04 a descale against $6.50, one tablet, and a year in one box at two cleanings a month. It works in Original and Vertuo machines, and in your drip, Keurig and espresso machines too.

How often Nespresso says to descale
- Every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first (Vertuo Next and Essenza Mini descaling guides).
- About every 600 coffees (the Canadian kit page).
- When the descale alert comes on, on machines that have one. Some Original models set the schedule by water hardness: hard water means sooner.
BLITZ suggests two cleanings a month for 1 to 2 cups a day, since its tablet targets coffee oils as well as scale. That's one $24.95 box a year. Not sure which job is due? See coffee maker cleaning vs. descaling.
Original or Vertuo: what changes
Nespresso sells one kit "for all Nespresso machines," and the schedule is the same. The differences are the dose on the big Vertuo milk machines, the water and the buttons. With BLITZ, nothing changes: one tablet in the pod holder on either.
- Vertuo: 1 sachet and 0.5 L of water on a Next, about 20 minutes, with a lever-and-button sequence that varies by model. Model by model, and what the orange light means: how to descale a Nespresso Vertuo.
- Original: 1 sachet with water to the max line on an Essenza Mini, 15 to 20 minutes. Other Original models: how to remove limescale, brand by brand.
Vinegar: Nespresso says never
Vinegar is out on every Nespresso. The kit page says "Never use vinegar. It can damage your coffee machine." Older Original pages (Pixie) add that vinegar would "affect the taste of the coffee." Other brands' rules: coffee maker descaler vs vinegar.
Using BLITZ in a Nespresso
The BLITZ Coffee Maker Cleaner FAQ sets the placement by machine type:
"Single-serve pod machine: put the tablet in the pod holder, pick the largest cup size and brew."
Drip and espresso machines take it in the water tank. BLITZ says its tablet works in a Vertuo too, in the pod holder with no capsule.
- Tablet in the pod holder, no capsule, fresh water in the tank and a container under the outlet.
- Run the water through: use your machine's descaling cycle, or the largest cup size if your machine offers a choice.
- Rinse: throw out the water, wipe off loosened residue and run one more full cycle of fresh water.
- Heavy scale? Run a second cycle with a new tablet. One tablet per cycle.
Tip: Don't skip the fresh-water cycle. BLITZ's FAQ says it's there so your coffee doesn't taste like the cleaner.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a non-Nespresso descaler in my Nespresso?
Yes. BLITZ says its tablet works in any Nespresso, Vertuo included: one citric acid tablet in the pod holder with no capsule, then a full fresh-water rinse, for about $1.04 a use. Just never use vinegar.
How many descales are in a Nespresso Descaling Kit?
Two on most machines: one sachet per descale, $6.50 each at $13.00. A Vertuo Lattissima or Creatista uses both sachets at once.
Where does the BLITZ tablet go in a Nespresso?
In the pod holder, with no capsule, on Original and Vertuo machines alike, says BLITZ. Then run a full fresh-water rinse.
Can I descale a Nespresso with vinegar?
No. Nespresso says never to use vinegar, because it can damage the machine.
