How to Descale a Nespresso Vertuo, Model by Model (and the Orange Light)
On a Vertuo Next or Pop+, an orange light that blinks 3 times and then goes steady means it's time to descale (on a Vertuo Up, the Maintenance button turns steady orange). Put 1 sachet of Nespresso descaling liquid and 0.5 L of water in the tank, hold the button 7 seconds twice with the lever unlocked, run the solution into a 1 L container, then rinse with fresh water: about 20 minutes. Nespresso says every 3 months or 300 capsules, and never vinegar. With BLITZ, one tablet goes in the pod holder with no capsule, says BLITZ: about $1.04 a descale.
One tablet per descale: BLITZ Coffee Maker Cleaner, $24.95

Vertuo orange light: what each pattern means
The descale alert is a warning, not a lockout: Nespresso says you can still make a few coffees. And orange doesn't always mean descale. The patterns Nespresso Canada lists:
| What you see | Model | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Orange and white blink alternately 3 times, then steady | Vertuo Next | Time to descale |
| Orange 3 times, then steady white | Vertuo Pop+ | Time to descale |
| Maintenance button steady orange | Vertuo Up | Time to descale |
| Half green, half red, steady | VertuoPlus | Time to descale |
| Blinks alternately 3 times, then steady | Original Vertuo (round or flat head) | Time to descale |
| Orange descale alert, blinking or steady | Vertuo Lattissima | Time to descale |
| Fast orange blinking while only water runs | Next, Pop+ | A cleaning or descaling cycle is running |
| Steady orange | VertuoPlus | Special Functions menu is open, not a fault |
| On 1.5 seconds, off 0.5 seconds | Next, Pop+ | Water tank empty or not seated |
| 2 fast blinks, then steady white | Next, Pop+ | Check the capsule, the lever (locked) and the water |
| 2 fast blinks and a pause, over and over | Next, Pop+ | Electronic error (fix below) |
| Light fading down | Next, Pop+ | Overheated and cooling down |
Orange or red? The Pop+ descale alert is orange in both its manual and Nespresso Canada's page. The last four patterns are orange or red on a Next; on a Pop+, Nespresso Canada calls them red (the manual gives no colour).

How to descale a Vertuo Next or Vertuo Pop+, step by step
You need: 1 sachet of Nespresso descaling liquid, 0.5 L (17 oz) of water and a container of at least 1 L. Time: about 20 minutes. The two machines differ only at step 4.
- Eject and empty. With the machine on, open the head to eject the capsule. Empty the drip tray and capsule container. On a Pop+, also remove the cup support.
- Fill the tank. Pour in the sachet and 0.5 L of water. Put the container under the coffee outlet.
- Start the mode. Close the head, lever unlocked (toward the front). Hold the button at least 7 seconds, until it blinks fast. You now have 45 seconds for step 4.
- Confirm. Next: turn the lever to lock, then back to unlock. Pop+: open and close the head, lever still unlocked. Hold the button 7 seconds again.
- Descale. Lock the lever and press the button once. The machine stops on its own when the first phase ends.
- Rinse. Empty the container, rinse the tank and fill it with fresh water. Press the button.
- Finish. When the button stops blinking fast and turns steady, you're done. Wash the trays, wipe the machine and let it rest 10 minutes.

Careful: Once started, descaling on a Next or Pop+ can't be interrupted. If a Next loses power partway, it restarts in descaling mode and Nespresso says to repeat both cycles. Never top up the tank during descaling.
Tip: No fast blinking after the second 7-second hold? The 45 seconds ran out and the machine went back to brewing mode. Start again from step 3.
How to descale a Vertuo Up
The Maintenance button turns steady orange when it's time. About 15 minutes, and it can't be interrupted.
- Prepare. Eject the capsule. Remove the maintenance module, separate the capsule basket and empty it.
- Fill. 0.6 L (20 oz) of water and 1 sachet in the tank. Remove the cup support and set a container of at least 1.5 L under the outlet.
- Enter the mode. Turn the machine on. Hold Maintenance at least 3 seconds, until the coffee button turns blue, then press Maintenance twice: the coffee button turns steady orange.
- Descale. Close the lever and press the coffee button. The cycle takes about 5 minutes, then pauses.
- Rinse. Empty the container, rinse the tank and fill it completely with fresh water (once only). Press the coffee button again: about 4 minutes.
- Finish. Wash the maintenance module in hot, soapy water, put it back and let the machine rest 10 minutes.
VertuoPlus, original Vertuo, Vertuo Lattissima and Vertuo Creatista
VertuoPlus: eject the capsule, then switch the machine off by holding the lever down 3 seconds. Add 1 sachet and at least 0.5 L of water; set a container of at least 0.8 L. Hold the button and lever down together 3 seconds (steady orange), push the lever down once, then press the button.
Rinse with fresh water. To exit, hold the button and lever down together: 3 seconds in the VertuoPlus manual and Nespresso Canada's English page, 6 to 7 seconds on its French page. Hold until the light turns steady green.
Original Vertuo, round or flat head: the same sequence as the Next, with 1 sachet plus 0.8 L of water (round head) or 0.5 L (flat head) and a container of at least 0.8 L. After the rinse, hold the button 7 seconds to leave the mode.
Vertuo Lattissima: 2 sachets, water to the "descale" mark (about 1 L). Plug the descaling pipe from the back into the milk carafe connector and the mode starts. With a 1 L container under both outlets, press cappuccino. To rinse, fill to MAX with fresh water and press latte macchiato.
Vertuo Creatista: clean the steam tip holes, add 2 sachets with water to the descale line and set a 2 L container. Hold Steam and Milk Temperature together for over 5 seconds, then press Steam. To rinse, refill to the line with fresh water and press Steam again.
An Original-line machine (Pixie, CitiZ, Essenza Mini) uses its Espresso and Lungo buttons instead: see how to remove limescale from a coffee maker, brand by brand.
How often should you descale a Nespresso Vertuo?
- Every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first, say Nespresso's Vertuo Next and Vertuo Pop descaling guides.
- About every 600 coffees, says Nespresso Canada's descaling kit page.
- When the alert appears. On a Lattissima or Creatista, set the water hardness with the supplied strip first.
Hard water scales a machine faster: check how hard the water is in your city. And don't put it off: Nespresso Canada's warranty doesn't cover defects resulting from calcium deposits.
Vertuo orange light still on after descaling? What to check

- The mode never started. The button must blink fast before you lock the lever. If it didn't, start over.
- It was interrupted. A Next unplugged partway restarts in descaling mode: run both cycles again.
- It's still in descaling mode. Still blinking fast after the rinse? See how to exit descaling mode below.
- Heavy scale. A badly scaled VertuoPlus or original Vertuo may stop and blink mid-cycle. Wait several minutes so the solution can work, then press the button again.
- It isn't the descale alert. 1.5 seconds on, 0.5 off: reseat the tank. Two fast blinks and a pause, repeating: unplug for 10 seconds, then if needed reset (head closed, lever unlocked, press the button 5 times within 3 seconds).
- Vertuo Up won't start: one orange blink means fill the tank; five orange glows mean a capsule is still inside.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my Nespresso Vertuo blinking orange?
Three orange blinks, then a steady light, is the descale alert on a Vertuo Next or Pop+. Fast orange blinking while water runs is a cleaning or descaling cycle. Other patterns point to the tank, the lever or an error (table above).
How do I get my Vertuo out of descaling mode?
On a Next or Pop+, finish the rinse: the button turns steady on its own. If it keeps blinking, hold the button 7 seconds. Original Vertuo: hold the button 7 seconds. VertuoPlus: hold the button and lever down together until the light turns steady green.
Is the Vertuo cleaning cycle the same as descaling?
No. The cleaning cycle is a fresh-water flush: on a Next, no capsule, lever locked, press the button 3 times within 2 seconds. It doesn't remove scale. When each job is due: coffee maker cleaning vs. descaling.
Can I use BLITZ tablets in a Nespresso Vertuo?
Yes. BLITZ says its tablets work in a Vertuo: one tablet in the pod holder, no capsule, then a full tank of fresh water to rinse. That's about $1.04 a descale ($24.95 for 24), versus $6.50 with Nespresso's kit. The steps above.
Can I descale a Nespresso Vertuo with vinegar?
No. Nespresso Canada says never to use vinegar, because it can damage the machine. More in coffee maker descaler vs vinegar.
