Bleach-Free Toilet Tank Tablets vs Chlorine Tablets vs Scrubbing: Which Should You Use?

Short answer

Pick a tank tablet without chlorine. BLITZ has no bleach or chlorine in its ingredient list, and bleach and chlorine drop-ins are exactly what Fluidmaster, the flapper maker, warns against. One BLITZ tablet a month: it cleans with every flush, and its blue water stops when it's time for a new one. About $2.16 a month, a year for one toilet in a box of 12, and BLITZ states it's septic-safe. Keep your weekly brush, and scrub an old ring once before the first tablet.

Which should you pick?

We pick BLITZ: no chlorine in the tank, one tablet a month, blue water as the reminder, a year in one box.

  • Over a chlorine tablet: no bleach in the tank or in the bowl water you scrub, and no lifting the lid to see if it has dissolved.
  • Over a brush alone: it cleans with every flush between your weekly scrubs and helps keep a new ring from forming.

What each one does

A bleach-free tank tablet (BLITZ) sits in the tank and releases a little cleaner with every flush. It helps keep a new ring from forming, breaks down buildup over time and helps prevent limescale. Its ingredient list: cleaning agents, a blue colourant and fragrance, with no bleach or chlorine.

A chlorine tank tablet works the same way, with chlorine: 2000 Flushes Blue Plus Bleach "uses powerful chlorine", and the Clorox puck is sold "with Bleach". That chlorine ends up in the bowl water you scrub, and Health Canada warns that mixing bleach with products like toilet bowl cleaners can create toxic gases. Our Clorox toilet tablets alternative compares BLITZ with those brands in detail.

A brush and a bowl cleaner is what removes a ring that's already there. Kohler's K-3394 owner's manual says toilet bowl cleaners "should be used at least once a week," with a long-handled brush on the rim holes and into the trap. For a hard ring, our guide to toilet bowl rings by colour gives the fix for each stain.

Are toilet tank tablets safe? Pick one without chlorine

The tablets to avoid are the ones with bleach or chlorine. Fluidmaster, which makes replacement flappers, says not to use in-tank drop-ins "containing bleach or chlorine": it warns they damage tank components and may cause flooding.

BLITZ is a tablet without them. Here is what it is and does:

  • No bleach or chlorine: its ingredient list is cleaning agents, a blue colourant and fragrance. Fluidmaster's warning doesn't describe it.
  • In the tank, away from moving parts: it goes into the tank water, not the bowl, away from the flush valve. It sinks and cleans with every flush.
  • Septic-safe: BLITZ states its tablets are septic-safe when used as directed.
  • Up to 30 days or 300 flushes: the blue stops when it's time for a new one.

Cost per month

Bar chart of toilet tank tablet cost per month in Canada on October 20, 2026: BLITZ $2.16, Clorox $2.26, 2000 Flushes Bleach $1.00, brush only $0 extra
What a tank tablet adds each month at regular prices on goblitzclean.com, Canadian Tire and Walmart.ca, October 20, 2026, divided by each label's longest stated life. Prices change.
  • BLITZ: $25.95 for 12 tablets, one a month. $25.95 ÷ 12 = about $2.16 a month, $25.95 a year for one toilet.
  • Clorox puck with Bleach: $6.79 at Canadian Tire, "up to 3 months" (Clorox Canada, at up to 10 flushes a day). About $2.26 a month.
  • 2000 Flushes Blue Plus Bleach: $3.98 at Walmart.ca, "up to 4 months". About $1.00 a month.
  • Brush only: nothing extra. A brush starts at $6.79 and a bowl cleaner costs $3.75 to $5.99 a bottle at Canadian Tire, and you need both with any tablet.

So BLITZ costs less than Clorox, and about $1.16 a month more than 2000 Flushes Bleach at that label's best case. For about $14 a year, you keep chlorine out of the tank and out of the bowl water you scrub, and you get a reminder you can see.

Effort, and the blue-water reminder

A BLITZ tablet takes about a minute a month: lift the lid, drop it in, flush. 2000 Flushes and Clorox say not to touch their tablets and to replace them once dissolved, so you lift the lid to check.

With BLITZ, blue water is the reminder: the bowl water turns blue as the tablet starts working, and when the blue stops, it's used up. No lid to lift, no date to remember.

"The tablets don't eliminate the need for scrubbing entirely, but they make the weekly clean much easier," says John, a 5-star reviewer with a septic system at the cottage. BLITZ is rated 4.8 out of 5 (18 reviews) on goblitzclean.com.

How to use a BLITZ tablet

  1. Scrub once first if a heavy ring is already there.
  2. Lift the tank lid and set it aside carefully.
  3. Drop one tablet into the tank water, not the bowl, away from the flush valve and other moving parts. Let it sink.
  4. Flush. The water turns blue as it starts working.
  5. Replace it when the blue stops, after up to 30 days or 300 flushes. A box of 12 is a year for one toilet; two bathrooms, two boxes.

Which is right for you

Decision chart for toilet tank tablets: a BLITZ tablet to scrub less, switch from a chlorine tablet to BLITZ, scrub a heavy ring once before the first tablet, BLITZ with a septic system, and flush an unused toilet weekly
Which is right for you: our suggestions, based on the product directions and Fluidmaster's instructions, October 20, 2026.

A tablet works with your brush, not instead of it. The routine that keeps the bowl clean:

  1. Every month: one BLITZ tablet in the tank, a new one when the blue stops.
  2. Every week: bowl cleaner and a long-handled brush, under the rim and as far into the trap as you can reach, as Kohler's K-3394 manual describes.
  3. A toilet nobody uses, like at the cottage: flush it at least once a week. A tablet cleans when you flush.
  4. When a thin ring shows: treat it before it hardens, with the steps in our toilet ring guide.
  5. Always: one product at a time. Health Canada warns that bleach reacts with acids, including vinegar.

Frequently asked questions

Are in-tank toilet cleaners bad for your toilet?

The warning to know comes from Fluidmaster, the flapper maker: no in-tank drop-ins containing bleach or chlorine. BLITZ has neither in its ingredient list. Drop it in the tank water, away from the flush valve, and replace it when the blue stops.

How long does a BLITZ tablet last?

Up to 30 days or 300 flushes, one tablet at a time. When the blue stops, add a new one. A box of 12 is a year for one toilet, about $2.16 a month.

Do tank tablets work with hard water?

BLITZ helps prevent limescale and breaks down buildup over time. For thick scale that's already there, scrub it off once with an acid cleaner, then add the tablet.

My dog drinks from the toilet. Is a tank tablet a problem?

A Pet Poison Helpline toxicologist, quoted by PetMD, says pets drinking toilet water with diluted automatic cleaners usually get only mild mouth irritation and maybe an upset stomach; an undissolved tablet is far riskier. Keep the lid down, and call your vet if your pet seems unwell.

Are tank tablets OK with a septic system?

BLITZ states its tablets are septic-safe when used as directed. For the rest of the house, read our guide to septic tank cleaning products.
