White Film on Dishes and Cloudy Glasses: The Vinegar Test and 6 Fixes
White film is almost always hard-water minerals or detergent left behind by an empty rinse aid dispenser, the wrong detergent dose, lukewarm water or a dirty dishwasher. Rub a glass with a vinegar-dampened cloth: if the film lifts, soak the glasses in vinegar for 15 minutes, then fill the rinse aid, match the dose to your water, start with 49°C (120°F) water and clean the filter, then the machine itself with one BLITZ tablet every two weeks. If the glass stays cloudy, it's etching: permanent, so use less detergent and shorter cycles.

Is it hard water, detergent or etching? The vinegar test
More detergent fixes one cause of white film and worsens the other two, so take one minute to find out which you have.
- Rub the glass with a cloth dipped in white vinegar. This is Whirlpool's spot test: if the film starts to lift, it's mineral deposits from hard water. If the glass stays foggy, Whirlpool says etching is the likely cause, or a silica film, and it won't come off.
- Look at how the film behaves. A powdery or gritty film that wipes off with a dry finger is usually detergent that didn't dissolve or rinse away (GE lists old or damp powder detergent among the causes of spots and film).
- Hold the glass up to the light at an angle. Glassmaker Libbey says shades of blue, purple, pink or brown mean the glass is etched.
- Look inside the dishwasher too. White crust on the tub floor, filter or spray arms means scale is building up in the machine.

What causes white film on dishes
An LG dishwasher manual sums it up: the cloudy film "is usually caused by minerals in the water reacting with the dishwasher detergent." One of these six things is almost always behind it.
- Hard water. Calcium and magnesium dry as a chalky film. Whirlpool and KitchenAid say their dishwashers work best below 15 grains per gallon (about 257 mg/L); GE calls 12 grains (about 205 mg/L) and up extremely hard and recommends a softener.
- Too much detergent. LG blames cloudy glassware on a "combination of excessive detergent and hard water." In soft water, extra detergent is also what etches glass, GE warns.
- Too little detergent in hard water. GE lists "too little detergent" among the causes of spots and film, and says hard water needs more detergent.
- No rinse aid. Rinse aid makes water sheet off instead of drying in drops. LG and GE both list an empty rinse aid dispenser among the causes, and Whirlpool says rinse aid minimizes "the repeat buildup of the white film." Not all detergent packs contain it, Whirlpool notes.
- Water that isn't hot enough. Whirlpool says its dishwashers "perform best with incoming hot water of 120°F (49°C)," and GE and LG list low water temperature among the causes of spots and film.
- A dirty or crowded dishwasher. A clogged filter and blocked spray arm holes rinse poorly, and scale in the tub flakes back onto the dishes. Overloading does the same (GE and LG both list it): see how to load a dishwasher for better cleaning.
How hard is the water in your city?
Hardness varies a lot across Canada, even within Greater Montréal. Montréal island's water averaged 123 mg/L in the City's 2022 report, just inside the USGS "hard" band (121 to 180). Laval measured 51 to 61 mg/L in 2025 and Gatineau 40: soft. South Calgary averaged 224 and Regina 203: very hard.

Converting to grains: dishwasher manuals and detergent charts often use grains per gallon, so divide mg/L by 17.1. That puts Montréal at about 7 grains, Laval at about 3 and south Calgary at about 13. GE's detergent chart calls 0 to 3 grains soft, 7 to 12 hard and 12 and up extremely hard.
What this means in Québec: Laval, Gatineau, Québec City (whose water the City describes as very soft to moderately soft), Chicoutimi and Jonquière all have soft water, and Montréal island is at the low edge of hard.
So a white film here is more often too much detergent or an empty rinse aid dispenser than extreme hardness. On the Prairies or on a hard well, hard water is the usual suspect. Look up your city in our hard water checker.
Tip: On a private well, have the water tested: hardness can be several times what a city supplies, and iron or manganese stains are a different problem. See our guide to hard well water.
How to get rid of white film on dishes, step by step
Change one thing at a time and give it two or three loads. Hands-on time: about 20 minutes, plus one empty cycle.

- Do the vinegar test (1 minute). If the glass stays cloudy, skip to etched glass: none of the steps below will clear it.
- Fill the rinse aid and check its setting (2 minutes). Fill the dispenser inside the door to the full line. Bosch recommends a separate rinse aid even if your detergent includes "a small dose." Still spotty? Raise the setting one level (LG ships at 2 and suggests 3). If your water is very soft and glasses are etching, Whirlpool suggests lowering it instead.
- Match the detergent to your water (next load). Use dishwasher detergent only, never hand dish soap or laundry detergent. Whirlpool says quality tablets and packs "have been proven better than powder, liquid, or gel detergents at reducing filming." With powder or gel, use less in soft water and the full dose in hard water (GE). Bosch warns not to add extra detergent to make up for missing rinse aid.
- Start the cycle with hot water (1 minute). Whirlpool says to run the kitchen tap 30 to 60 seconds before you press start, then check a cup with a thermometer: aim for 49°C (120°F). The INSPQ recommends keeping the water heater at 60°C, so water still lukewarm after a minute points to a long pipe run or the heater itself. Use a High Temp option if your model has one.
- Clean the filter and spray arms (10 minutes). Twist out the filter, rinse it under hot water with a soft brush and lock it back in. Frigidaire's quick guide for its glass trap models says to clean the trap monthly, while its Canadian support page says to clean the filter and glass trap every 2 to 3 months. Spin the spray arms and clear blocked holes with a toothpick.
- Clean the empty dishwasher (one cycle). Put one BLITZ Dishwasher Cleaner tablet in the detergent compartment of the empty dishwasher and run a normal cycle, no dishes and no detergent. It breaks down the grease and limescale on the walls, racks and spray arms that can end up back on your glasses.
To clear film already on your glasses: Whirlpool's method is to soak them, fully covered, in white vinegar for 15 minutes, then hand-wash and dry them with a microfibre cloth.
For a full load, a GE owner's manual says: take out metal utensils, add no detergent, start the heaviest cycle and, about 20 minutes in, pour 2 cups (500 mL) of white vinegar into the bottom. If that fails, use 1/4 cup (60 mL) of citric acid crystals. Needing this more than twice a month? GE suggests a water softener.
Careful: Never use vinegar in the same cycle or soak as a bleach-based product. Health Canada warns that bleach reacts with acids, including vinegar, and can release toxic gases. One product at a time.

When the dishwasher itself needs a cleaning
Look inside with a flashlight. Any of these means the machine is part of the problem:
- A white, chalky crust on the tub floor, the door edge or around the filter
- Spray arm holes rimmed with white scale or blocked with debris
- A dull, cloudy film on the inside walls or the racks
- Grease and a sour smell around the filter (a separate problem: see why a dishwasher smells bad)

How often: Whirlpool and KitchenAid recommend cleaning the inside of the dishwasher about every 30 days. BLITZ is one tablet every two weeks, so a 24-tablet box lasts a year, for $23.95: about $1.00 a cleaning.

Scale in the dishwasher usually means scale in the kettle, coffee maker and washer too: see hard-water buildup in appliances.
Etched glass: what can't be fixed
Etching is damage to the glass itself: a haze that won't wash off, sometimes with a rainbow tint in the light. Whirlpool calls it "permanent dullness or roughness" that "is irreversible and may necessitate replacing the glassware." No vinegar, rinse aid or dishwasher cleaner will bring it back.
You can still protect your other glasses. Whirlpool lists the causes as very soft water, too much detergent, poor glazing and long, hot cycles. GE says: "Use less detergent if you have soft water" and wash glassware "in the shortest cycle that will get them clean."
- Cut the detergent if your water is soft (Laval, Gatineau, Québec City, Chicoutimi or Jonquière, for example).
- Skip long, hot cycles for glasses, and keep them on the top rack, away from the heating element, as Whirlpool advises.
- Hand-wash antique and delicate glasses. Whirlpool notes that some "might be too delicate for automatic dishwashing."

Frequently asked questions
Why is my dishwasher leaving a white film on my dishes?
Usually minerals in the water reacting with the detergent, made worse by too much detergent, no rinse aid, lukewarm water or a dirty filter. Do the vinegar test first, then fix the rinse aid, dose and water temperature, and clean the dishwasher.
How do I get the white film off my glasses?
Soak them fully covered in white vinegar for 15 minutes, then hand-wash and dry them (Whirlpool), or run GE's vinegar cycle described above. If the film is still there afterwards, it's etching and it won't come off.
Does rinse aid get rid of white film?
It keeps hard-water film from coming back by helping water sheet off the dishes, and Whirlpool, LG and Bosch all recommend it. It won't remove etching, and if your water is very soft and glasses are etching, Whirlpool suggests lowering the setting.
Will a dishwasher cleaner fix cloudy glasses?
It fixes the machine side of the problem. BLITZ breaks down grease and limescale inside the dishwasher, so they stop ending up on your dishes. Rinse aid, the right dose and hot water do the rest; etched glass is permanent damage that nothing reverses.
Can etched glasses be fixed?
No. Etching damages the glass surface, and Whirlpool says the glassware may need replacing. Less detergent, shorter cycles and the top rack protect the rest.
Is Montréal water hard?
Yes, but only just. Montréal island's water averaged 123 mg/L (about 7 grains) in the City's 2022 report, just over the 120 mg/L line where the USGS scale starts calling water hard. Laval's measured 51 to 61 mg/L in 2025, which is soft.
