Garbage Disposal Cleaner vs Drain Cleaner: What Each Does, and What to Use When

Short answer

No. Don't pour a chemical drain cleaner into a garbage disposal: InSinkErator, Moen, GE and Waste King all say lye and caustic drain cleaners don't belong in their units. The difference: a disposal cleaner cleans and deodorizes a garburator that still drains, while a drain cleaner is a lye or bleach product made to dissolve clogs. For a smell, use a cleaner tablet; for a slow drain, a plunger or the trap; for a hum, the hex key and reset button; for the rest, a plumber.

Garbage disposal cleaner vs drain cleaner: what each one does

They sit side by side in the cleaning aisle, but they solve different problems. One is upkeep for a garburator that works. The other is a chemical meant for a blocked pipe.

So don't ask "which is stronger?" Ask "does the sink drain?" If it drains and smells, you need a cleaner. If it doesn't drain, no cleaner will fix it, and a drain cleaner is the wrong tool in a garburator.

Why InSinkErator, Moen and Waste King say no drain cleaners

Every garburator maker we checked says it in its own manual or support pages:

  • InSinkErator lists "caustic drain cleaners or similar products" among the things never to put in a disposer, next to glass, metal and shells. Its Canadian FAQ says to avoid harsh cleaning products.
  • Moen is the bluntest: never put lye or chemical drain cleaners in the disposal, "as they cause serious corrosion of metal parts." It adds that the damage is easy to spot and that all its warranties are then void.
  • GE Appliances says lye or drain cleaners may corrode the disposer's metal parts.
  • Waste King puts caustic drain cleaner on its list of things you should not put down its disposals, with glass, utensils and hot grease.

"But my drain cleaner says it's safe for garbage disposals"

Some do: Drano's Max Gel page lists garbage disposals. Now read its precautions: if the drain doesn't clear, never use a plunger, and on a garbage disposal drain, don't turn the disposal on, because the gel may splash back. Consult a plumber, it says.

So if the gel fails, you're stuck with a sink of bleach gel you can't plunge or grind away, in a unit whose maker said no in the first place.

Drain cleaner safety: what Health Canada says

Health Canada names drain cleaners among the household chemical products to handle with care. Its rules:

  • Read the hazard symbol. CORROSIVE means it can burn skin or eyes, and damage the throat and stomach if swallowed.
  • Never mix products. Some mixtures give off harmful gases. Bleach reacts with any product that contains ammonia or an acid, vinegar included, and those gases can cause burning eyes and light-headedness, and can be deadly.
  • Protect yourself. Goggles, rubber gloves and good ventilation. Store it closed, in its original container, out of children's reach.
  • If someone is exposed, call a poison centre right away: in Québec, the Centre antipoison du Québec at 1-800-463-5060, 24 hours a day. Call 911 if the person is unconscious, not breathing or having seizures.

Careful: BLITZ tablets contain citric acid. Never drop one, or vinegar, into a sink that still holds a drain cleaner, above all a bleach one. Wait until the drain cleaner has been fully flushed away as its label says, or let the plumber deal with it.

Already poured a drain cleaner, and the sink is still full?

  1. Don't plunge, and don't run the garburator. Drano's own label says so: it may splash back.
  2. Add nothing else (no second drain cleaner, no vinegar, no tablet), and air out the kitchen.
  3. Call a plumber and tell them exactly what's in the sink. Keep the bottle handy.
Drain cleaner safety chart: wear goggles and gloves, ventilate, keep the bottle; never pour drain cleaner in a garburator, plunge after it or mix it with vinegar or a cleaner tablet

On a septic tank, there's one more reason to skip them: Québec's environment ministry lists drain openers among the products that should never go into a septic system. More in our septic tank guide.

Smell, slow drain or hum? Find the right fix

Run the cold water, switch the garburator on for a few seconds and watch. InSinkErator's test: if you see a whirlpool in the water, the drain line is probably clogged. If it hums without grinding, or makes no sound at all, it's the unit, not the pipe.

Garbage disposal diagnosis chart: a smell needs a cleaner tablet, a slow drain needs a plunger then the trap, a hum needs the hex key, silence needs the reset button, and a leak or drain cleaner in the sink needs a plumber

It smells, but drains fine: a cleaning job

The one problem a cleaner solves. The smell usually comes from food under the rubber splash guard and grease in the grinding chamber. Power off and scrub the splash guard, then run a thin stream of hot water, drop in a BLITZ tablet and run the unit while it foams. Full steps in how to clean a garburator safely.

Slow drain or standing water: plunger first, then the trap

You need: a sink plunger (flat cup), a bucket, a towel, and a clamp or locking pliers if a dishwasher drains into the garburator. Time: about 20 minutes.

  1. Cut the power. Unplug the garburator under the sink or turn off its breaker.
  2. Seal the system. On a double sink, put the stopper in the other bowl (InSinkErator). If the dishwasher hose runs into the garburator, pinch it closed with a clamp or locking pliers so the water doesn't push back into the dishwasher (Home Depot).
  3. Plunge. Fill the sink with about 10 cm (4 inches) of water. Set the plunger over the garburator opening, press down slowly and gently, then pull up sharply. Repeat several times (InSinkErator).
  4. Flush. Once it drains, power back on and run the water and the garburator for a minute or two.
  5. Still slow? Open the trap. Bucket and towel under the curved pipe below the sink, loosen its slip nuts, take it off and clean out the bends. Hand-tighten the nuts when you put it back (Home Depot, Mr. Rooter).
  6. Trap clear but still slow? The clog is further down, in the pipe inside the wall. That takes a drain auger or a plumber.

Hums or won't start: a jam, not a clog

Neither a cleaner nor a drain cleaner will free a stuck turntable. Power off, turn the 1/4-inch hex key in the socket under the unit (or, on a Waste King, a wooden spoon against a lug from above), lift out the object with tongs, then press the reset button until it clicks and stays in. Brand-by-brand steps: our jammed garburator section.

When to call a plumber

  • The plunger and the trap didn't fix it, or the clog is in the wall pipe.
  • Several drains are slow at once: the problem is further down the line than a plunger reaches.
  • A drain cleaner is sitting in the sink. Tell them which one.
  • There's water under the sink, it keeps jamming, or it won't run after the hex key, a reset and a breaker check.

In Québec, plumbing work must go to a contractor with an RBQ licence. For plumbers, that licence is handled by the CMMTQ, the master pipe-mechanics' corporation: its logo on the truck means the right licence, and the RBQ's online register lets you check any contractor.

Where BLITZ fits, and where it doesn't

BLITZ Disposal Cleaner & Deodorizer is for the first row of the chart: a garburator that drains but smells.

  • It foams through the grinding chamber to clean food residue and grease off the walls, and leaves a light citrus scent.
  • One tablet twice a month. Two for 3/4 and 1 HP motors, one or two for 1/2 HP; the motor size is on the label of the unit under the sink.
  • About $1.04 a clean: $24.95 for 24 tablets, about a year at one tablet a clean (price on October 20, 2026).
  • Septic-safe, like every BLITZ product.
  • From a Québec company in Laval, with service in French and English. Free shipping from $40, most orders in 2 to 3 business days, 10% back in store credit and a 30-day money-back guarantee (refund policy). Also on Amazon.ca.

What it doesn't do: clear a clogged drain or fix a jammed motor, as its product page says. For those, use the steps above.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put drain cleaner in a garbage disposal?

No. InSinkErator, Moen, GE and Waste King all say not to: lye and caustic cleaners corrode the metal parts. Use a plunger or the trap, or call a plumber.

Is Drano safe for a garbage disposal?

Drano lists garbage disposals on its Max Gel page, but InSinkErator, Moen, GE and Waste King say no chemical drain cleaners. If the drain doesn't clear, Drano itself says not to plunge or run the disposal.

Will a garbage disposal cleaner fix a clogged sink?

No. A cleaner like BLITZ cleans residue and odour; a clog needs a plunger, the trap, a drain auger or a plumber.

How do you plunge a sink with a garbage disposal?

Power off, stopper the other bowl and clamp the dishwasher hose. Fill the sink with about 10 cm of water, then plunge over the garburator opening: slowly down, sharply up, several times.

Can I use baking soda and vinegar instead of a drain cleaner?

For loose bits, InSinkErator suggests a flush: half a sink of warm water with 1/4 cup of baking soda, then run the garburator as you pull the stopper. It won't clear a real clog. Never use vinegar in a sink that still holds a bleach drain cleaner.
