Ice, Lemon Peels or Vinegar: What Actually Cleans a Garburator?
Ice scours and lemon peels freshen, but neither cleans the grease and food residue that cause most garburator smells, and vinegar with baking soda mostly fizzes as the two neutralize each other. InSinkErator's manual says to use a disposer cleaner for odours from grease buildup: that's what a BLITZ tablet is, at $1.04 a clean. Scrub the underside of the splash guard by hand every week or two.
Which should you pick?
- Our pick for smells: a BLITZ tablet twice a month for the grinding chamber, plus a scrub under the splash guard.
- Between cleans: ice and a few lemon peels, free, to freshen.
- Vinegar and baking soda: cheap, but not more than a rinse. Never with bleach.
- Slow drain, hum or jam: none of these. See garbage disposal cleaner vs drain cleaner.

Ice, lemon peels, vinegar or a tablet: what actually cleans a garburator
Each one does a different job. Ice scrubs, citrus covers smells, vinegar and baking soda fizz, and a cleaner tablet cleans the residue itself. Maker quotes were checked October 20, 2026.

| BLITZ tablet | Ice + lemon peels | Vinegar + baking soda | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost per clean (Oct. 20, 2026) | $1.04 (two tablets for big motors: $2.08) | About $0 with leftover peels, 97¢ with a fresh lemon | About 50¢ (our estimate) |
| Watch out | Two tablets for 3/4 and 1 HP motors | Feed peels in gradually | Never with bleach |

What InSinkErator, Moen and Waste King actually say
Word for word, from the three garburator makers we checked:
| Method | What the maker says |
|---|---|
| Ice | InSinkErator's manual: "Grind hard materials such as small bones, fruit pits, and ice. A scouring action is created by the particles inside the grind chamber." Its FAQ adds: "There are better ways to clean your garbage disposal than using the ice method." |
| Citrus | InSinkErator's manual: "Grind peelings from citrus fruits to freshen up drain smells." Its Canada FAQ: "Place ice cubes mixed with lemon/lime wedges down your disposal to freshen it up." |
| Baking soda | InSinkErator's manual: half a sink of warm water with 1/4 cup of baking soda, then run the disposer as you pull the stopper "to wash away loose particles." Moen and Waste King use it with warm water to scrub the splash guard. |
| Vinegar | Not mentioned by any of the three. |
| A cleaner | InSinkErator's manual: "Use a disposer cleaner, degreaser, or deodorizer as necessary to relieve objectionable odors caused by grease build-up." |
| Where smells start | InSinkErator: "if you smell any odors coming from your disposal, it's usually the sign of food build up," and food waste "can also accumulate under the sink baffle." Waste King: "most odors are coming from food build-up on the splash guard over time." Moen: "Odors may also come from the splash guard." |

Ice cubes in a garbage disposal: a scrub, not a sharpener
- It does scour. Hard bits knock loose food stuck where they're ground, at the turntable and grind ring.
- There's nothing to sharpen. InSinkErator's FAQ says its units "don't have blades or knives": lugs throw food against a stationary grind ring.
- How: cold water on at a medium stream, garburator on, a handful of ice. GE adds a tablespoon of rock salt.
Lemon peels in a garbage disposal: good for the smell, not the residue
Citrus covers drain smells; it doesn't remove what's causing them. InSinkErator's own words are "freshen up," and it says a smell usually means food buildup. Feed peels in gradually with the water and unit running: its manual says not to fill the disposer with a lot of peels at once. Leftover peels from juicing are free; a whole lemon cost 97¢ at Walmart.ca on October 20, 2026.
Vinegar and baking soda in a garbage disposal: mostly fizz
Vinegar is an acid and baking soda is a base, so they neutralize each other. The fizz is carbon dioxide from that reaction, not scrubbing. What's left is mostly water and sodium acetate, a salt.
- The popular recipe comes from GE Appliances: 1/2 cup of baking soda, then 1 cup of white vinegar, 10 to 15 minutes, then a hot-water flush. InSinkErator, Moen and Waste King don't mention vinegar at all.
- InSinkErator's own version is baking soda only: half a sink of warm water with 1/4 cup, then run the unit as you pull the stopper to wash loose particles away.
- Never with bleach. Health Canada warns that bleach reacts with any cleaning product containing an acid, including vinegar, and gives off toxic gases.
A cleaner tablet: what InSinkErator's manual describes
A tablet is the one option made for the residue itself. BLITZ Disposal Cleaner & Deodorizer foams through the grinding chamber, where food residue and grease build up, and leaves a light citrus scent. Its product page lists citric acid, sodium carbonate and foaming surfactants: the surfactants lift grease, which an acid alone doesn't.
- How: a thin stream of hot water, one tablet, garburator on while it foams, then a few seconds of rinse. Two tablets for 3/4 and 1 HP motors; one or two for 1/2 HP.
- Hot water is fine here. InSinkErator says no hot water while grinding food, but "it is OK to drain hot water into the disposer between grinding periods," which is when the tablet goes in.

Finish with the rubber splash guard flaps, where Waste King says most odours start: power off and scrub their underside with baking soda and warm water. Full steps, with the safety rules: how to clean a garburator safely.

Garburator cleaning myths, and what not to do

- "Hot water flushes the grease." InSinkErator: "Don't use hot water when grinding food waste." GE explains why: cold water firms up grease so it gets chopped and flushed.
- No chemical drain cleaner. InSinkErator and Waste King both rule out caustic drain cleaners, and Moen says lye or chemical drain cleaners "cause serious corrosion of metal parts."
- Never mix products. Not vinegar or a citric acid tablet with bleach, and not a tablet in a sink that still holds a drain cleaner.
Cost per clean, at regular prices (October 20, 2026)
Regular online prices on Walmart.ca, not sales; amounts per clean are our estimates. Prices move and vary by store.
| Method | What you buy | Per clean |
|---|---|---|
| Ice | Tap water | About $0 |
| Lemon | One lemon, 97¢ | $0 with leftover peels, 97¢ with a fresh one |
| Baking soda flush (InSinkErator) | Great Value baking soda, $1.37 (30¢ per 100 g) | About 18¢ for 1/4 cup |
| Vinegar + baking soda (GE) | Great Value white vinegar, $2.27 (6¢ per 100 mL), plus baking soda | About 50¢ (15¢ vinegar, 35¢ baking soda) |
| BLITZ tablet | 24 tablets, $24.95 | $1.04 ($2.08 for 3/4 and 1 HP motors) |
Over a year, BLITZ costs less than the weekly fizz. At one tablet twice a month, a box is $24.95 a year. Vinegar and baking soda every week come to about $26 a year (52 × 50¢), for a fizz that no garburator maker we checked recommends.

Frequently asked questions
Do ice cubes sharpen garbage disposal blades?
No. Garburators have no blades: lugs push food against a fixed grind ring. Ice only scours.
Are lemon peels good for a garburator?
For the smell, yes: InSinkErator suggests citrus peels to freshen drain smells, fed in gradually. They don't remove the buildup behind the smell.
Can I clean a garburator with vinegar?
It won't hurt as a rinse, but InSinkErator, Moen and Waste King don't mention it, and with baking soda the two mostly neutralize each other. Never use vinegar with bleach.
Why does my garburator still smell after ice and lemon?
The smell usually comes from food buildup under the splash guard or grease in the grinding chamber. Scrub the splash guard by hand and use a cleaner tablet for the chamber. If the sink drains slowly, deal with that first: Moen says a slow-draining unit can smell on its own.
Will a cleaning tablet fix a clogged garburator?
A BLITZ tablet is made to clean and deodorize the grinding chamber. A clog is a drain problem and a jam is a motor problem, each with its own fix: see garbage disposal cleaner vs drain cleaner.
