Vinegar or Bleach to Clean a Washing Machine? What Each Maker Allows
Bleach for a musty smell, vinegar for light limescale, each only if your washer's maker allows it, and never together: Health Canada warns that bleach reacts with acids like vinegar and releases toxic gas. Whirlpool, Maytag and Bosch say no vinegar in the drum; GE, LG and Samsung give a vinegar dose, and Samsung's Self Clean takes bleach only. For routine cleaning, one BLITZ tablet handles residue and scale in one cycle, with no chlorine and nothing to mix: $24.95 for 24.

Vinegar or bleach in a washing machine: which for what

| Your problem | What to use |
|---|---|
| Musty smell | Bleach in the cleaning cycle, if your manual names it, or a cleaner tablet |
| White, chalky scale | Vinegar if your maker allows it, or a tablet with citric acid |
| Routine cleaning every two weeks | A cleaner tablet: residue and scale in one cycle |
| Black stains on the door seal | Not a cycle: a gel or a diluted wipe on the rubber (see seals) |

What vinegar and bleach actually do in a washer
Vinegar dissolves scale. Canadian vinegar is 4.1 to 12.3% acetic acid (Food and Drug Regulations), and scale is mostly calcium carbonate, which any acid breaks down. But it isn't a detergent: in our view as formulators, it does little for the waxy film of detergent and softener.
Bleach goes after odour and residue, not scale. Household bleach is a 3 to 8% sodium hypochlorite solution, strongly alkaline (PubChem: pH 11.1 to 11.6 at 5%). It oxidizes the grime behind a musty smell, but scale only dissolves in acid, so bleach leaves it there.
Vinegar plus baking soda cancels out: the fizz is acid and base neutralizing each other.
What each washer maker allows
Makers disagree, and models differ. This is what their manuals and support pages said on October 20, 2026.

| Maker | Bleach | Vinegar |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool | 1 cup (236 mL); more "could cause washer damage over time" | Not in the drum ("particularly rubber seals and hoses"). A removed dispenser drawer can soak in half vinegar, half water |
| Maytag | Clean Washer cycle with bleach, affresh or another washer cleaner, monthly | "No, you should not pour vinegar in your washing machine drum" |
| Bosch | Not covered on its vinegar page | Not recommended: may degrade rubber parts over time |
| GE | 1 cup (250 mL) in Basket Clean, once a month | 1 cup (250 mL) in Basket Clean (top-load page); diluted on the door gasket |
| Samsung | Self Clean takes bleach only: to the MAX line (WF45T6000 front loader) or 240 mL (WA45T3200 top loader) | Not in Self Clean. For hard water: 4 cups in the empty tub, longest hottest cycle, then a hot rinse |
| LG | Bleach compartment, to the MAX line | 200 mL (3/4 cup) in the liquid detergent cup |
The pattern: where makers give a bleach amount, it is one cup or the MAX line, in an empty washer, and LG, Samsung and Whirlpool all want one cleaning agent per cycle. Samsung Canada adds that a washer cleaner may help if odours persist. Model by model: Samsung Self Clean and LG Tub Clean.
How much to use, step by step
A bleach cleaning cycle (1 to 4 hours, mostly waiting)
- Empty the drum. No laundry, detergent or other cleaner.
- Measure plain liquid chlorine bleach: 236 mL for Whirlpool, 250 mL for GE, 240 mL for a Samsung top loader. LG and Samsung front loaders: up to the MAX line, no further.
- Put it where your manual says. LG: the bleach compartment. Samsung WF45T6000 Self Clean: the main-wash compartment. Samsung: never straight into the drum.
- Start the cleaning cycle right away (Tub Clean, Self Clean, Clean Washer or Basket Clean). A Samsung front-load Self Clean can take up to 4 hours.
- Rinse and air out. Run Rinse+Spin if residue remains (Samsung's advice), wipe the gasket dry, leave the door open.
A vinegar cycle (only if your maker allows it)
- Use the maker's amount: 200 mL for LG (detergent cup, Tub Clean), 250 mL for GE (basket, Basket Clean), 4 cups for Samsung (empty tub, longest hottest cycle, no detergent). Whirlpool, Maytag, Bosch: skip it.
- Never in the bleach compartment, where a little bleach may still sit.
- Finish with a hot water rinse, as Samsung describes, and leave the door open.
Tip: Makers say once a month or every 20 to 40 cycles. Brand by brand: how often to clean your washing machine.
Can you mix vinegar and bleach? Never
Health Canada is blunt: "Bleach will react with any cleaning product containing ammonia or an acid, including vinegar." Effects range from burning eyes to death. CANUTEC (Transport Canada) names the gases: bleach with an acid gives chlorine gas, bleach with ammonia gives chloramine vapours, and symptoms can show up 24 to 48 hours later.
- Not in the same cycle, even in two different compartments.
- Rinse between products: an empty rinse after bleach, before any acid.
- Acids hide elsewhere: descalers, citric acid tablets, some toilet cleaners. Ammonia hides in many glass cleaners.
- Ventilate, wear gloves. Health Canada advises goggles, rubber gloves and fresh air.

Careful: Mixed them by accident? Leave the room, open windows, and get everyone into fresh air. CANUTEC says to call 911 or a poison centre for moderate to serious exposure. In Québec, the Centre antipoison is at 1-800-463-5060, 24 hours a day.
What vinegar and bleach do to rubber seals
Vinegar: on top of the three makers above, Consumer Reports, citing a repair-business owner, says front loaders are especially susceptible. GE still allows diluted vinegar on the gasket, wiped off with warm water.
Bleach: LG warns that straight bleach "can cause the gasket to deteriorate over time." For the door seal, LG and Samsung dilute 3/4 cup (177 mL) in 3.8 L of warm water; Samsung says wipe, let stand 5 minutes, then dry. Bleach left in the drum can cause rust, Samsung adds.
Our view: dose and contact time matter most. Never soak the rubber; rinse and dry the folds. Black spots that don't wipe off are stains in the rubber: see mould stains on a washer gasket. BLITZ Mold Stain Remover is a gel made for gaskets; its page says never to use it at the same time as another cleaner, vinegar included.
Bleach, vinegar and a septic tank
Québec's Ministry of the Environment lists chlorine products, and household cleaners used in too large a quantity, among things to keep out of a septic system, and asks owners to spread laundry over a few days. Our suggestion: keep to the measured monthly dose, never pour leftover bleach down a drain, and run the cleaning cycle on a light laundry day. BLITZ washer tablets are septic-safe, like every BLITZ product. More in septic tank cleaning products.
Where a cleaner tablet fits
A tablet is the routine option: residue and scale in one cycle, no chlorine, nothing to mix. The BLITZ Washing Machine Cleaner page lists citric acid, sodium carbonate, sodium percarbonate, sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, sodium sulfate, sodium silicate and zeolite.
- Citric acid for scale, the job vinegar does.
- Sodium percarbonate (an oxygen bleach) plus a surfactant for detergent residue and grime. No chlorine.
- One tablet in the empty drum, not the detergent drawer, then the hottest cycle or Tub Clean. On a Samsung, use a hot cycle rather than Self Clean, which takes bleach only. Unscented.
- Every two weeks, a year in a box: 24 tablets for $24.95, about $1.04 a clean. Rated 4.9 out of 5 (14 reviews) on goblitzclean.com.

Never add bleach to a tablet cycle: the tablet contains citric acid. Tablet vs vinegar, cost included: washing machine cleaner vs vinegar.
- Free shipping in Canada from $40, most orders in 2 to 3 business days.
- 10% back in store credit and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- Family-run in Laval, Québec, with a store and service in French and English.
- Septic-safe, like every BLITZ product. Also on Amazon.ca.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use vinegar or bleach to clean my washing machine?
For routine cleaning, a cleaner tablet does both jobs: one BLITZ tablet handles residue and scale in one cycle, with no chlorine and nothing to mix. If you use them anyway, bleach is the musty-smell option most makers list, in an empty washer; vinegar is for light scale, and only GE, LG and Samsung give a dose. Never both in one cycle.
Where do you put vinegar in a front-load washer?
For LG, 200 mL in the liquid detergent cup. For Samsung, against hard water, 4 cups in the empty tub. Never in the bleach compartment, and not in a Whirlpool, Maytag or Bosch drum.
Does vinegar damage a washing machine?
Whirlpool, Maytag and Bosch say it can wear rubber seals and hoses over time. GE, LG and Samsung give a dose: keep to it, for an occasional clean.
Can I use a cleaner tablet and bleach together?
No. BLITZ tablets contain citric acid, and bleach reacts with acids to release chlorine gas. Run them in separate cycles with a rinse in between.

NO CHLORINE, NO MIXING
BLITZ Washing Machine Cleaner & Descaler
One unscented tablet in the empty drum, then Tub Clean or the hottest cycle (on a Samsung, a hot cycle rather than Self Clean, which takes bleach only). Citric acid for scale, oxygen bleach for residue, no chlorine. Front-load, top-load and HE washers. 24 tablets, about a year of cleanings, $24.95.
Black stains on the door seal? Run the tablet cycle first and let the washer drain, then use BLITZ Mold Stain Remover (never both at once).
