How to Remove Limescale from a Coffee Maker, Brand by Brand
To remove limescale from a coffee maker, fill the tank with descaler and water, start the machine's descale mode (or brew a full tank with no coffee if it has none), let it run to the end, then rinse with a full tank of fresh water. Only the button that starts it changes by brand: find yours in the table below. One BLITZ tablet descales and breaks down coffee oils in the same cycle, for about $1.04 a clean.

Signs your coffee maker needs descaling
Limescale is the calcium and magnesium tap water leaves in the heater and lines, where you can't scrub it. Watch for:
- The descale light: DESCALE on a Keurig, a flashing Self Clean light on a Cuisinart Brew Central, a lit CLEAN button on a Ninja, a slowly flashing Calc/Clean on a Philips, an orange light on a De'Longhi Dedica's steam button.
- Slower brewing, more gurgling or smaller cups.
- Coffee that's cooler or flat. Breville says scale cuts the brewing flow, temperature and taste.
- White, chalky deposits in the tank or around the outlet.
Coffee oils on the basket, pod holder and carafe are a separate job: see coffee maker cleaning vs. descaling.
How to descale any coffee maker: the 6 steps
Every manual we read uses this order. You need: a descaler, fresh water, a 1 to 2 L bowl and 15 to 75 minutes.
- Empty the machine: no pod, capsule or grounds; empty the drip tray.
- Take out the water filter (Keurig, De'Longhi, most Breville espresso machines, Philips AquaClean).
- Fill the tank with descaler, then water to the line your manual gives.
- Put a big container under every outlet, steam wand included.
- Start the descale mode and let it finish. No mode? Brew a full tank with no coffee. Ninja says a cancelled cycle leaves the machine not properly descaled.
- Rinse with fresh water, a full tank or more. On most machines the light only goes off after this rinse.

Careful: Never mix a descaler with vinegar or another cleaner.
With a BLITZ tablet, about $1.04 a clean
BLITZ Coffee Maker Cleaner is one tablet per cycle, and it breaks down coffee oil residue along with the scale.
- Drip and espresso: tablet in the water tank, then the descale or clean cycle (or a brew with no coffee).
- Pod machines like a Keurig: tablet in the pod holder, no pod, largest cup size.
- Then one full cycle of fresh water. Heavy scale: run a second tablet first.

Rinse until the water runs clear, as in the product page photos below (same machine).

How to start descaling: the button, brand by brand
Fill the tank first. Then, from each maker's manual or Canadian support page:
| Machine | To start | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Keurig K-Supreme, K-Slim | Plugged in, off: hold 8oz + 12oz, 3 s | 15 to 20 min |
| Nespresso CitiZ, Inissia, Pixie | On: hold Espresso + Lungo, 3 s | 15 to 20 min |
| Nespresso Vertuo Next | Lever unlocked: hold the button 7 s | About 20 min |
| De'Longhi Dedica | Hold the steam-icon button 10 s | 25 to 30 min |
| De'Longhi Magnifica S | Hold the descale button 5 s | About 45 min |
| Breville Barista Express | Hold 2 CUP, then POWER with it | Not given |
| Breville Bambino Plus | Off: hold 1 CUP + STEAM, 5 s | Not given |
| Cuisinart Brew Central | Press Self Clean, then ON | One brew |
| Hamilton Beach | Brew 30 s, off 30 min, finish | 30 min soak + brew |
| Ninja Specialty CM401 | Full Carafe, then CLEAN | About 60 min |
| Philips 2200, 3200 | Hold Calc/Clean 3 s, then start | Up to 30 min |
How to descale a Keurig
K-Supreme, K-Slim, K-Express: start Descale Mode as in the table, brew the solution until ADD WATER lights, then rinse until the DESCALE light goes off. Older models (K-Classic, K-Elite, Keurig 2.0) have no mode: brew the solution through, let it stand 30 minutes with the power on, then run at least 12 largest-size rinse brews.
Keurig Canada says to descale every 3 to 6 months. Every model and the stuck light: how to descale a Keurig, model by model.
How to descale a Nespresso (Original and Vertuo)
Nespresso says never to use vinegar. Eject the capsule and empty the drip tray first.
Original line: CitiZ, Inissia, Pixie, Essenza Mini
- Fill: 0.5 L of water and 1 sachet of descaler; a 1 L container under the outlet.
- Enter descaling mode: machine on, hold Espresso and Lungo 3 seconds (Essenza Mini: 5). Both lights blink.
- Run it twice: press Lungo until the tank is empty, pour the used solution back in, run it again.
- Rinse with a tank of fresh water, then hold the same two buttons to exit (Pixie: 1 second).
Vertuo line
On a Vertuo Next, hold the button at least 7 seconds with the lever unlocked, run one unit of descaler in 0.5 L of water, then rinse. Unplug it partway and both cycles must be redone. Other Vertuo models and the orange light: how to descale a Nespresso Vertuo.
How to descale a De'Longhi (Dedica, Magnifica S, Stilosa)
Take out the water softener filter if you have one. De'Longhi's EcoDecalk takes 100 mL per descale: a $19.99 bottle does about 5, or about $4.00 a descale.
Dedica (EC685, Dedica Arte EC885)
- Fill to MAX with diluted descaler. Remove the portafilter; container under the wand and coffee outlet.
- Hold the button with the steam icon 10 seconds, until the three buttons flash in sequence. Turn the steam dial to hot water, press the steam button.
- Close the dial now and then so some solution runs through the coffee outlet too.
- Rinse: fresh water to MAX, press the steam button again. Short of MAX, it asks for another rinse.
Magnifica S (ECAM22.110): descaler to level A, water to level B (1 L), a 1.5 L container under the spouts. Hold the descale button 5 seconds, turn the steam dial to I. When the tank is empty, rinse with clean water the same way.
Stilosa (EC260): no descale program. About every 200 coffees, run the tank through the hot water setting a quarter at a time, then rinse with two full tanks.
How to descale a Breville (Barista Express, Bambino Plus, Barista Pro)
Flashing or solid? On a Barista Express, a flashing CLEAN/DESCALE light asks for a backflush with a cleaning tablet, not a descale. A solid light means descale.
Barista Express (BES870)
- Fill: one Breville descaling sachet in 1 L of water.
- Enter Descale mode (see the table). Ready when POWER, 1 CUP, CLEAN/DESCALE and HOT WATER/STEAM are lit.
- Run the three outlets: 1 CUP (about 25 seconds), steam (about 13), hot water (about 8). Repeat until the tank is nearly empty; never remove or fully empty it.
- Rinse with 2 L of fresh water the same way, then press POWER to exit.
- Bambino Plus: remove the filter, fill to the DESCALE line, 2 L container under the outlets. Off and cool, hold 1 CUP and STEAM 5 seconds, press 1 CUP. Rinse with fresh water to MAX.
- Barista Pro: MENU, GRIND AMOUNT dial to DESCALE, follow the screen. Barista Touch: Settings, Descale cycle.
- Precision Brewer (drip): when DESCALE flashes, hold SELECT 3 seconds (about 15 minutes), then brew two tanks of fresh water.
How to descale a Cuisinart coffee maker
- Brew Central (DCC-1200C): when Self Clean flashes, fill the tank, press Self Clean, then ON. It beeps five times and shuts off. Still flashing? Repeat with fresh solution. Then one tank of fresh cold water.
- PerfecTemp (DCC-3200C): remove the charcoal filter, hold CLEAN until its light flashes, then run one tank of fresh water.
- Single-serve (SS-10C): when DE-SCALE shows, turn off AUTO OFF, hold HOT WATER and RINSE, run until ADD WATER, then rinse the same way. Every 3 to 6 months.
The Brew Central manual uses 1/3 white vinegar, 2/3 water. A coffee maker descaler or a BLITZ tablet goes through the same cycle without the vinegar smell.
How to descale a Hamilton Beach coffee maker
- Fill with one pint of white vinegar or a coffee maker cleaner and descaler, as Hamilton Beach Canada's FAQ says (or a BLITZ tablet and a full tank of water).
- Brew 30 seconds, turn it off, wait 30 minutes, turn it back on and let the brew finish.
- Rinse with two full carafes of cold water.
Models with a CLEAN setting, like the 46391, show CLEAN after 30 brews: select it with BREW OPTION (about 35 minutes), then brew clean water 2 or 3 times. On others, a star on the clock means it's time.
How to descale a Ninja coffee maker
- Fill (Specialty CM401): descaling solution as its package directs, topped up to the Max Fill line, or white vinegar to the Travel Mug line, then water to Max Fill.
- Start: empty carafe in place, select Full Carafe, press CLEAN. About 60 minutes with pauses; don't remove the carafe.
- Rinse: at End, wash the carafe and tank and brew a Full Carafe Classic of plain water.
DualBrew Pro (CFP300): CLEAN, then START BREW, about 75 minutes, once per mode you use. Ninja says a water-only cycle won't descale it, and a CLEAN light that comes back means there's still buildup: run it again.
How to descale a Philips espresso machine (2200, 3200 LatteGo)
- Prepare: remove the LatteGo or milk frother and the AquaClean filter; empty the drip tray.
- Fill: the whole bottle of Philips descaler (CA6700), then water to the Calc/Clean mark. A 1.5 L bowl under the spouts.
- Start: hold Calc/Clean 3 seconds, then press start/stop. Don't interrupt it: up to 30 minutes, then a 3-minute rinse with a fresh tank.
- Finish: put in a new AquaClean filter.
Interrupted? Refill to the Calc/Clean mark, let it rinse, descale again soon.
Descaler, vinegar or a BLITZ tablet?
- The maker's descaler: one bottle per brand. On October 19, 2026, it cost about $4.00 a descale for De'Longhi, $4.17 for Breville, $6.50 for Nespresso and $19.94 for a Keurig bottle.
- Vinegar: fine in Cuisinart, Hamilton Beach and Ninja drip machines, whose manuals give the ratio. See coffee maker descaler vs vinegar.
- BLITZ tablets, our pick: about $1.04 a clean, one tablet, in drip, pod and espresso machines. Other options are ranked in the best coffee maker descalers in Canada.

How often to descale, by brand
| Brand | What the maker says |
|---|---|
| Keurig | Every 3 to 6 months; 3 with mineral-rich water |
| Nespresso | Every 3 months or 300 capsules (descaling guides) |
| De'Longhi | When the light comes on; Stilosa about every 200 coffees |
| Breville, Philips, Ninja | When the machine asks |
| Cuisinart | By water hardness and use; single-serve every 3 to 6 months |
| Hamilton Beach | Monthly if used daily; weekly with hard water |
Hard water scales faster: check how hard the water is in your city. A filter changed on time slows scale down (Philips says an AquaClean changed when prompted means no descaling for up to 5,000 cups).
With BLITZ, which also clears coffee oils, our suggestion is twice a month at 1 or 2 cups a day: a box of 24 lasts a year.
Descale light still on, or the cycle stopped?
Almost always, the procedure didn't run to the end. Here is what each maker says to do.

Tip: A plain brew with descaler in the tank removes scale, but on a machine with a descale mode it won't reset the light. Only the maker's full procedure does.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to remove limescale from a coffee maker?
Run a descaler through the descale mode (or a full brew with no coffee), then rinse with a full tank of fresh water. One BLITZ tablet does it, for about $1.04 a clean.
How long does it take to descale a coffee maker?
15 to 30 minutes on most machines with a descale mode (Nespresso, newer Keurig, Dedica, Philips), about 45 on a Magnifica S or an older Keurig, and 60 to 75 for a Ninja clean cycle.
Can I descale my coffee maker with vinegar?
In a Cuisinart, Hamilton Beach or Ninja drip machine, yes: their manuals give the ratio. Keurig, Nespresso, De'Longhi, Philips and Breville (for its espresso machines) say not to. BLITZ tablets have no vinegar and go in drip, pod and espresso machines.
Why is my descale light still on after descaling?
Usually the mode was never started, the cycle was interrupted or the rinse stopped early: run the full procedure, rinse included. On a Cuisinart or Ninja, a light that comes back means scale is left.
Do I need to remove the water filter before descaling?
Yes, on most machines. Keurig, De'Longhi, Philips (AquaClean), Cuisinart PerfecTemp and Breville Bambino Plus and Barista Pro manuals all say to take it out.
